Vent: The things people say...

I went bowling with a friend today and as we were leaving a random guy came up to us. He said hi and then touched my stomach (!!!) and asked if I was pregnant.

Um, no....but thanks for asking. Tongue Tied

I just said "No..I'm not". He then turned to my friend, said hi and then one of his friends (that overheard) called him back to their lane; he quickly returned and then the friend yelled "sorry" to me.

That is awesome and makes me feel great about myself...man, way to bring my day down a few notches.

I don't even understand people - wtf would someone feel it's okay to first off touch someone's stomach and then ask if they're pregnant? I like to think I don't appear pregnant...Sad

Re: Vent: The things people say...

  • I would have kicked the ever-loving sh!t out of that guy.  But it's the touching thing that would have bothered me!  WTF!
  • To add my two cents to this post:

When I was pregnant, 9 days from my due date, I was at the store purchasing a CD. I had a worker come up to me and asked if I needed help. I replyed "No thanks" and went on with my buisness. He than proceeds to stand there and asks me " Are you having twins?" Really a$$hole?? I think I gave him the look of death and replyed "No". He said "Oh..." and walked away. Thank you for making me feel like I was a giant whale!

  • Was he trying to hit on you?  If so, that's a really strange approach.

Rude rude rude.  I never comment on ANYONE looking pregnant until they've personally told me they're pregnant.  Even if they look full-on 9 months ready to pop.  I just would never want to assume like that, for fear of 1) making them feel like sh!t, and 2) making myself look like a total a$$.

I don't think he was trying to hit on me..and if he was it was the worst attempt ever.

  • I have to wonder if maybe he was dared to do this or something.  Drunk people in bowling alleys will do some crazy things.

Did it seem like the friend who apologized  was like "sorry, don't mind my stupid drunk friend"?

That is my interpretation of what happened, if it makes you feel any better.

I'm pretty sure the guy wasn't drunk - it was just today at like 1:00 in the afternoon. Both the guy and his friend seemed really embarrassed so this leads me to believe he really thought I was pregnant...but I like the thought that it was a dare. That makes me feel better. :-)

  • That is horrible!  I must say having met you IRL there is no way you could look pregnant unless you actually were!

Like others said maybe it was dare?   What a moron though!!

I'm sorry that happened :(  When my DD was 9 months old, I was asked how far along, and it crushed me.   I hadn't lost all my baby weight yet, but I certainly didn't think I looked pregnant.

And even if you WERE pregnant, it was completely inappropriate for a stranger to touch you.

One time when I was 8 months pregnant (and a touch crabby), a couple came up to me, touched my stomach and asked when I was due.  I just stared at them for a second, and said, "I'm not pregnant..."   Embarrassed the heck out of them, but I didn't care - you should NEVER touch someones stomach without their permission :)

  • About 2 weeks ago, I was asked by a co-worker (from the other side of the floor) when I was going to deliver.  I delivered in May and am 10lbs below my pre-pg weight.

I was also told in Mar that I looked like I was either going to have twins or "pop any day now" - I was 6 months pg and had only gained 10lbs the entire pregnancy.

    People are a$$holes.

  • This kinda sounds like something a person with aspergers might say/do.  People with this disorder struggle with social appropriateness at times as well as interpreting social cues.  The guys with him may have been his PCAs and probably were embarrassed?

At first when I read this response, I was really annoyed.  I hate it when people make excuses for rude/irresponsible behavior. (note: I don't consider a true medical diagnosis an excuse)

But, the more I think about it, the more I think you might have a point.  The fact that his friends called him back wasn't a big deal (maybe it was his turn), but the fact that they apologized for him might show that maybe they did have a level of responsibility for him.

Who knows.  Either way, you will make me think twice the next time I go to glare at someone behaving rudely!
