For those of you who are teachers...

Did you graduate with a degree in education? If not, how did you go about becoming certified to teach?

I coach a middle school girls' basketball team and the school board wants all coaches to be part of the a school system in the county. I just graduated in Dec. with my Accounting Degree (after beginning school as a Music Ed Major) and I'd really like to look into getting my teaching certificate/whatever it is I will need to be able to teach. I've been looking into local colleges to see if I can find anything out about where to start but haven't found any information so far. I'm going to start contacting staff at area colleges, but I just wondered if any of you knew anything about this? Thanks girls!

Re: For those of you who are teachers...

  • You can definitely do some sort of lateral entry kind of deal.  I was contemplating that before I went to nursing school.  Unfortunately, I don't remember all the details.

  • PS, check out your county school system's webpage if you haven't already.  They should have SOME sort of information on there.  If not, I think Wake County does and I'm sure you can get some info from that on just how to do it.

  • Check out your state dept. of education's webpage and look for something like second career teachers or teaching certification (I can't remember the exact search terms I used when I was curious about it - hubby is a teacher).

    hope that helps...

  • Thanks girls! I looked around the school board's page and finally found some helpful information. I'm going to check out the state dept of education's page later this evening!
