WWYD?

I've been wanting to do the Brazilian Keratin Treatment for my hair. My hair stylist charges $450-500 to do it for my hair type. I told DH and he sort of flipped on the price so I've been putting it off. Today, I saw a groupon to do it for $99 (he is way more likely to think that's reasonable). But it's for a new salon. One, I don't know much about the place. Two, I love, love, love my stylist who I know needs the money. And I already talked to her about possibly doing it during my last appointment. What do you think I should do? And if I do the groupon thing, what do you think I should tell my stylist b/c I think she'll notice?

Re: WWYD?

  • I think if you're that interested in the treatment, look up the salon reviews that the groupon is for and see if it's a salon you'd be willing to even go to.

Your stylist should understand that a $350-$400 price difference on a hair treatment you've been wanting done does not mean that you are going to leave her for another salon.

  • Could you see if your stylist could do it at your house or somewhere other than the salon for cheaper? Usually the salon is who sets the prices anyways, and then they take a huge chunk out (40-50%). that way you'd pay less and she'd make the same or even more than she would at the salon. I'd be nervous about trying a groupon for that intense of a treatment somewhere I'd never been before.
  • I wouldn't think twice about going to the new salon (after seeing some good reviews). But then again, I ditched my stylist after she wanted to charge me 3 times the normal rate for our wedding. Everyone needs money in their pocket - I'd rather keep mine in my own!
  • If the new salon gets good ratings, I say do it. Your stylist should understand that you can't pass up a $300 savings!

  • you could always tell your stylist that your husband got you the groupon because you'd been talking about wanting the treatment...
  • I would probably call her and ask if they'd be willing to give you a price break to come have it done at their salon, if not, it's too good of a deal to pass up.  If y'all are close then I'm sure she'll understand.  I'd rather pay (for example) $250 and stay with my regular stylist than $99 and go somewhere else.  But I couldn't justify paying $500 with her if somewhere else was having it for $99.+

    .

  • I know my stylist can't give me the discount. She rents her space and has trouble making ends meet enough as it is. I've asked before on something else and she just couldn't do a huge discount like that. So, I'm taking the plunge and doing the groupon thing. I sure hope my hair doesn't fall out...
  • I would go to the cheaper person if they had good reviews.

Also have you had it done before? Do you get the formula without the formaldehyde ?

I haven't had it done before. There is formaldehyde in the product. The salon informed me that it?s a cosmetic grade amount and is non-damaging. Since this information was given after the groupon was sent out claiming it was chemical-free, they will refund the groupon. i'm torn.

  • I lurk but I'd figure I'd contribute to this one....

I would at least ask about getting a discount. My mom owns a salon (out of state) and does this process. Her cost is $25 - $50 depending on the brand she goes with. So, even if you paid the groupon rate, your stylist would make some $. But I do think she'd understand if you used the groupon....it's a really good deal.
