mid-atlantic people ?

Ok, I'm a bit surprised that I've heard 2 intelligent adults call what we had in Alexandria yesterday either "almost a tornado" or a "mini tornado" based on the high wind speeds. Is it not common knowledge out here that a tornado is a spinning vortex (or funnel) that touches the ground, not just defined as very fast wind speeds?

I used to want to be a storm chaser and I'm from the midwest, so I realize that I may geekily know more on this topic than some - so maybe this isn't common knowledge as I had though :)

Re: mid-atlantic people ?

  • Where they being overly dramatic?  You know, "it's so windy it's like a tornado out there" type of thing?  I'm pretty sure it is common knowledge that tornado = funnel touching the ground and not just high winds.

This. Definitely common knowledge. People are morons.

I wish. But at least the one who said it was "almost a tornado" I'm sure it wasn't because of the full statement she made about how a tornado is Xmph and we got to Xmph - I ended up explaining it to her on the shuttle ride to the metro :-)

  • We've had tornado's or tornado type weather events in NJ and NY.  Actually my brother had one such event rip through this street a month or so ago.  I think the real term is short-line winds.  But we have had tornado warnings.  So it's definately possibly, but I can say... as someone who has seen a torando, the before and the aftermath, it's a different type of thing in the mid-atlantic region.
  • While the storm was crazy, it wasn't THAT bad.  And I was in Arlington/Alexandria during it all.  Our power did go out at work, but apparently Arlington is like that.  I did get to leave early because of it though.
  • Are you sure they didn't mean to say hurricane?  There was a 73mph wind gust that hit the Fairlington area of Arlington and knocked down over 50 tress... some right onto 395.  I had to drive through there yesterday after the storm hit and it's a complete disaster area.  There were trees on cars, houses, debris all over the roads, etc.  If I didn't know better, I would have thought a tornado hit.

I can't say exactly what they meant, but they said tornado!

Well apparently the National Weather Service sent a team out to Arlington yesterday to investigate, they determined it was straight line winds and couldn't find confirmation of rotational winds so I guess it's not THAT far fetched that people called it a tornado if it was enough for the NWS to investigate.

  • I just drove through old town alexandria today and it's still pretty messed up.  But I agree, much more hurricane-like.
