Anyone own Boston Terriers or Jack Russels?

So DH and I have a Jack Russel mix (adorable and just as hyper as you'd expect from a Jack Russel.) We'd tossed around the idea of getting a second dog, but weren't really looking to hard. I learned the other day about a Boston Terrier that was hit by a car and dumped off at the vets (DH's cousin.) She ended up needing to get her leg amputated and is currently healing. We went up to visit and her and Guinness seemed to get along well.

After she heals from her surgery we are going to bring her down and have her spend the weekend with us to see how she responds to our dog once she's healed and acting more like herself. Between now and then I just have to convince DH that the two breeds will do well together and that we need her. he's holding his ground that one dog is enough right now. After all she has been through I want to bring her home so badly. Anyone have any experience with terriers that can help out in my mission?

Re: Anyone own Boston Terriers or Jack Russels?

  • Gah no.  But DH and I are looking to get a second furbaby and the Boston is at the top of our list.

If you do go ahead and adopt the Boston, let me know how they are!

  • We had a Jack Russel terrier growing up.  She was a little cranky all the time and not very social.  She also had a janky leg...well half a leg.  She broke it as a puppy and it never healed correctly, so she only had half a working leg.  She hopped around all the time.

But she was cranky with our cats, and our other dogs (who were her puppies).  She fought with them a lot.  We loved her though!

  • My dog is half-chihuahua half-wiener.  My neighbor had a Jack Russell/Pit mix (weird, I know!) that was the sweetest dog.  Jackson was really affectionate and very protective.

How about going for "play dates" with the two dogs together and see how your current dog does.  I know when my dog had a playmate (roommate's dog) she got sad when the other dog wasn't around anymore.  Any chance that would work for your dog?  That could help convince your DH that it would be good.

Old roommate was gone a lot and left her dog with me 2-4 days a week.  Having two dogs isn't much different in care from one dog. Both need to do their business, eat, go to the vet, etc.  Doing it all at once wasn't much different and they loved having the company.

  • I don't know how they would get along but I was at a picnic last weekend and someone brought a puppy boston terrier.  He was the cutiest thing I have ever seen and if I could have snuck of with him I would have.  I talked about him for days and my husband said no because we already have 2 dogs and a cat.  Oh well.

You could post on the pets board.  They are very helpfull.  Good luck and post pics if you get him!

That's exactly what my Guinness is! He's way more Jack Russell than Pit so I usually just call him a Jack, but he has the Pit strength, musculature and some of the clumsiness.  It was so funny watching him figure out he could jump like a Russell. He would bound into the air and then be uncoordinated and his hind legs would flail around...hysterical!

Thanks for your help ladies!  The little lady got her stitches out yesterday so hopefully she'll visit us soon!
