I have the Dyson animal and am thinking of getting something simpler to just grab and use quick for the stairs and furniture. I have a lab and two cats.
Re: Rec your hand vac
We have this one that my parents got me. My mom called me asking what we needed for the house, while I was in the middle of struggling with lugging the vacuum up the stairs. It works well on the stairs and furniture, and it works great on the ceiling fans, too.
I concur with this!
I also have the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser and while it's wonderful on upholstery and carpet, it's useless on hard surfaces. The vents are on the side and they just blow stuff everywhere.

I have a Black and Decker Dirtbuster, the old-school style with the beater-bar and cloth bag. Mine is metal with a brown bag rather than the red plastic version (TRU carries a toy version in red for kids if you've visited their "cleaning and housekeeping" aisle - lol)
I don't know that they make them any more (I just visited the website to see if I could find a pic) since it's pre-HEPA and plastic canisters and bagless, but this is the similar idea, new generation (pet version)

(ETA: Darn it, that's a Dirt Devil. Every time I Google Dirt Buster I get Dirt Devil. This is from their website.)
We got this Eureka and Love it. It is great for stairs and we use it daily to clean liter that hte cat kicked onto the floor.
