community service opps?

i'm looking for a regular community service opportunity. i want something that we can do as a family to help those who really need/want it. i don't know exactly what that would look like - maybe volunteering at a women's shelter where my kids could play with their kids while my husband and i babysit? helping for meal prep at some sort of program that teaches a job/life skill? ken is a mechanic and would love to volunteer his expertise to help a family fix their only car... something that requires our time but not money. ideally something that allows the kids to somehow serve as well. and i'd prefer something in-line with the 'teach a man to fish' rather than the 'give a man a fish' mentality. anyone know of something like this that exists? or have any ideas for family service/outreach?

Re: community service opps?

  • if you're interested in a christian based homeless shelter opportunity then check out foundation for the homeless. it's perfect for a family to volunteer.

you could volunteer with one of the south churches in the evening during the weekdays where you prepare dinner and serve it and let the kids play with the kids in the program.  they have overnight opps too but that probably wouldn't work with 2 children.   or y'all could go on a saturday and spend the day with the families at the church.

  • very cool! thank you! :)
  • i was thinking of the same type of opportunity. we participate in Family Promise at our church (its a national program) and its the same type of program. Churches take in homeless families for the night so you cook for them, play with the kids, help with homework, etc.  Its very humbling and I don't think they'd mind y'all doing it as a family.
