Update on my medical situation

I posted it in my blog, but thought I'd let you ladies here know what's going on with my medical situation.  After I was denied from Duke (they said there were no tests, procedures, etc. they could do for me at this time, my doc has done everything) I was determined to find out what was causing my problems.  I know THEY ARE REAL and it's not in my head.

I started doing research on all the medications I had been on, etc.  I had stopped all my medications except one, Elmiron.  Elmiron is for interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome) and I've been on it for over five years.  I didn't think it would be that because I'd been on it for so long.  I did a search for "Elmiron Gastro" and it linked me to the IC website/forum.  Come to find out, SEVERAL people had developed the same problems as me: diarrhea, colitis, stomach pains, and nausea.  Once they stopped the Elmiron, their problems stopped.

So I took this info to my GI and he did some research.  Last year two people were hospitalized due to Elmiron with the SAME problems as me.  Again, once they stopped the medicine, their problems stopped. 1% of people have an adverse reaction to the capsule the medication is in.  It had been in my body for so long, my body started rejecting it.

So GI told me to stay off the E for two weeks to let it get out of my system and see if the problems went away.  About a week being off it, I felt so much better over all and my stomach pain had decreased!  The general feeling of "feeling like crap" has gone away and I feel much like my old self.  I still have stomach pains, but not anywhere near the severity of what they were!!

I talked to my urologist and it's whatever the capsule is made of that I was having an adverse reaction to.  I'm going to start the Elmiron in two more weeks (to make sure it's good and out of my system) but I'm going to take it out of the capsule and put it in some water/juice and shoot it.  Hopefully that will be the end of my problems!!  I can't believe for nine months I was sick due to a capsule and medicine I'd been on for five years.  I really hope this is what it is.  It has to be.  There is nothing else it could be.  Once I start the Elmiron back, if the symptoms return, I know it's the medication as a whole, and not just the capsule.

My disability runs out on August 31 and I will be returning to work.  I have a meeting with my boss next week to see what's going to happen when I go back.  Ugh, I'm not so thrilled about that.

Re: Update on my medical situation

  • I'm really glad you are feeling better! Good luck with everything!
  • I am SO glad you may have found the root of your issues. Fingers crossed that you're right and you're on your way to recovery!
  • This is such wonderful news!
  • This is really great news!! I hope that you continue to feel even better. Good luck at your meeting with your boss.
  • Thank you all!  I really hope this is the problem.  It has to be!  After all the tests I've had, there is nothing else it could be.  Thanks for all the prayers you've offered up.  It's great to have a network of friends I can rely on.  Even if we don't know each other in real life.

  • Great update! I think the talk with your boss and the possible culprit being found will allay her fears/concerns and give you your position and full responsibilities back with open arms!
  • Wow, that is crazy! But I will say, my mom is anermic and she may need iron injected again - its a long story - but they figured out she's allergic to the iron's "suspension" agent so its hard for her to get the treatment.

It would have never occured to me that you were having a negative reaction to the pills casing!

I'm glad the docs may have found your trigger!
