This week: finishing up Let The Great World Spin by Colum McCann
Next week: starting Moloka'i by Adam Brennert
* * * * *
Guess what I just got in the mail...my copy of Let The Great World Spin. FINALLY! A little too late though. ![]()
Anyway - we're starting Moloka'i by Adam Brennert next week, right? I know there was some discussion about whether LTGWS needed another week or not. Hopefully my copy of THAT will arrive on time lol. Are we going back to 4 weeks of reading, or keeping it at 3 weeks?
Amy - do you have a chapter breakdown planned?
Eclaire - start thinking about what you'd like to choose for the next book. ![]()
Re: Book Club Check-In!
I'll flip through the book today and get a breakdown planned.
I was working on LTGWS yesterday and CANNOT get past the second chapter. It is putting me to sleep.
darn! I finished the book last week - I will say that it was tough to get through at first, but "books 2 and 3" really flew by and at the end I was pleased
I also have trouble not reading a book - especially one that I bought since I usually just borrow books from family, friends, and the library.
as for Moloka'i - I have read it before but will re-read if I can get it from the library in time. I actually read it during a trip to HI (maybe the last one?) and then left it on the plane (luckily I was finished - but DH wasn't so we had to check it out of the library once before). Have you looked at Honolulu his new book? I just read that one a few months ago.
I've never heard of Moloka'i but after reading the synopsis, I'm pretty excited! If it's good, I may have to check out Honolulu. I just looked at the list and I can't believe I'm in two months... CRAZY! I am going to have to start planning now. Usually I am the one who looks at recommendations... not giving them.
MH just recommended The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. Has anyone read this? I'll have to do some research on this and other options.
I finished LTGWS and like PP, I had a hard time getting through it. Maybe it was the fact that I didn't really get where it was going but after forcing myself to keep going, I really got into it in the second half of Book 2 and all of Book 3.
this was me exactly!
Thank goodness there's hope. I'll plug along again today since I'm off on Mondays and see where I get.
I did see Honolulu and almost changed my selection since so many had read Moloka'i. Anyone have input on that? I'm flexible....
i thought we agreed to take one more week for LTGWS - so let's discuss Book Two this week, and Books Three and Four next Monday?
I definitely had a hard time with the Book One too
but it's going faster for me now!
so that means we start discussing Amy's book on Monday 8/23 - does that work for everyone?
I'm ready to discuss! Just have to look at the book to remember where Book 2 leaves off so I don't reveal any spoilers.
I vote Moloka'i for selfish reasons - I haven't read it and I just ordered it on Amazon today.
I can always order Honolulu as well, but I will need to do it sooner rather than later.
Is the plan to read one book per week???
I vote Moloka'i too (not b/c Honolulu is bad... but because it has been longer since I read Moloka'i)
no! that would be a lot
we started with 1/month but that pace was too slow for our previous books so we changed to 3 weeks to read with one week of down time but then lots of people had trouble getting this book (by mail order or library request) so we slowed down a little.
The current book is split into 3 sections - named book 1,2&3 so that is all we were talking about.
Ahhh, gotcha! now i feel better about the pace. I was reluctant to join b/c no way i can finish a book in a week!!! lol
I haven't read Honolulu yet, but its definitely on my list in the future!
I'm good with either though! I can read Molokai again as well. Loved that book!
Yes! It's excellent - really, really good. Definitely something I'd recommend if not everyone has read it.
(Also a fairly short and pretty easy read.)
I think I have pinned down my selection. Should I wait until next week to announce? OR maybe with the difficulty some have getting copies of books I should I come out now.
Yeah, go ahead and announce it in another post - most of the books have been easy to get but some of them have been a little tough so I think if we know a month in advance it might be good?
