Question about Student Loans

Ladies, my niece is going to Texas State and has asked me about student loans that she can get without having to involve her parents.  Do y'all know which loans these are?  It seems like every one I find, they need copies of their tax info and she doesn't want to involve them.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Question about Student Loans

  • I think she should fill out a FAFSA if she hasn't already. That will determine eligibility for any government loans. Stafford loans might be a good option for her.

  • How old is she?  I had to emancipate to get student loans w/o my parent's info.  It wasn't difficult at all; maybe it's something she can ask a counselor about.

i was thinking she'd have to emancipate unless she takes on private loans which potentially have higher interest rates, and in that situation she probably will still need a co-signer...

  • She needs to fill out the FAFSA and it will ask her if she is going to fill out her parent's info. She will answer no. She's only allowed to take Unsubsidized loans. If she is under "extenuating" circumstances she could get a dependency override and make herself independent and can qualify for full grant/loan eligibility.
