Some acquaintance posted a youtube video on facebook of a pastor poking fun at TV preachers. It got me curious and I started watching youtube videos of Benny Hinn and I'm just ![]()
I guess for a bit of background I come from a Charasmatic Christian environment where most of my childhood/teen years were spent surrounded by people in the church. Major milestones and events were revivals and conferences.
My "faith" has shifted quite a bit and I don't buy into a lot of what I grew up with. It's been very alienating to separate myself from a lot of that stuff.
I watch videos like this and just can't believe that people buy into this stuff. I can't believe I ever subscribed to it either. It just floors me that people all over the world think if they go see this TV preacher and have him yell "FIRE" at them and all of a sudden they'll be able to walk.
What do you think makes people buy into this stuff?
Re: Something to discuss
The need to believe, man.
True story - I used to be a waitress at this coffee shop / frenchie bistro on my college campus. We'd attract all sorts, including this one guy - maybe 24, 25 yrs. old - who'd come in alone everytime 3-4 days / week and stay for a few hours. One time, he asked me if I'd like to go see Benny Hinn with him. I told him (in a probably inappropriately bitchy way) that I thought it was a load of crap and I thought that anyone who was into that sort of thing was full of ***.
So, he took a huge swig of water and spit on me.
My big-time crush at the time was sitting at a table nearby and saw the entire incident. He stood up and says "Excuse me, is there a problem here?" Umm - yeah...
Jesus prefers spitting on people when they don't agree with him.
Wow. I can't believe he did that. Did you ever see the guy again?
a. This post was way better when I thought it was about Benny Hill
b. Isn't the answer just simply "faith makes these people believe."?

Many of them aren't. Then there are those that just stick around because it's the only sense of community they have. I can say I miss the community I had when I attended church but I don't miss all the BS.
Not really. He dissapeared for awhile, then slowly starting coming back. By that time I'm prety sure I was already, or just about to be, fired (they said as a result of constant tardiness. But I know that it was really for eating giant slices of the tortes after my shifts:))
I don't know Benny Hinn, but I'm pretty sure he hates me. As does Jesus. Everyone knows that Jesus hates people who don't believe in him. And non APers, of course.
I don't have any problems with someone wanting to be a wackadoo and believing some guy can shoot fire at them and they fall over but I DO start to have a problem when little old ladies are sitting at home draining their checking accounts sending nuts like Benny Hinn all of their money to support him and his fire shooting ways.
I also have a problem when people use their religion to spread hate and intolerance but that's a whole other can o' worms.
I have to say though, videos of people speaking in tongues are comedy gold.
Sometimes I wish I could just "like" a comment on here.
