Is Popeye's really all that? Really?

A Popeye's just opened somewhere in the area and it has been the talk of the town. Newspaper articles, features on the news. Even Bill Cosby was in town to celebrate the opening. Seriously, is a fast-food restaurant really worth all the fuss?

Re: Is Popeye's really all that? Really?

  • I've never eaten at one and have no interest. The only one in my city that isn't in a sketchy part of town is attached to a gas station. I try not to eat foods attached to a gas station.

  • I went to Popeye's once about 20 years ago and thought it was disgusting. I gag when I think about it.
  • I have never been a fan of fried chicken, so I don't get the Popeye's appeal.

And, normally, I would agree with your gas station rule. I lived in  Panama for a couple of years and I swear the best sandwiches and pizza in the whole country were served at gas stations.

  • I'm amazed by this. We have a couple of them, but I've never felt compelled to try it. I guess there's always a novelty factor when you finally get a national chain, but that degree of excitement confounds me.

  • This reminds me that at my old job the lab guy would bring me a cherry soda from Popeye's every Friday.  I miss him.

But no.  Popeye's is nothing to write home about.

I am amazed by these responses.  But then, I've grown up around it.  And it's always been a staple at Mardi Gras parades.  I rarely eat it - actually I can't remember when the last time I did - but I do really like their red beans, if they're still the same as they were like five years ago.

Their red beans are the bomb.

Seriously though, they have the worst employees. You could wait 20 minutes for your food in the drive through, no exaggeration, and they will hand you a container with food dripping off the sides of it.

For fast food fried chicken it is the best, but that is not a winning acheivment.

  • I just remembered I got french fries at Popeyes in New Orleans.  There was one next door to my hotel and I needed a snack while I was waiting for the airport shuttle.

A friend of mine did a story on gas station fried chicken in Hartford. He swears it's the best he's ever had. And Hartford has a LOT of chicken joints.

We have one Popeye (that I know of) right near Fenway. I've never been in and it's currently closed for remodel or something but it always struck me as a strange spot to have Boston's ONE Popeye's.

In looking at their store locator, seems like they have quite a few in New England, though.

No kidding. Doesn't Bill Cosby have better things to do than come to Reno and promote Popeye's?

I seriously think the news media is just trying to divert attention away from our ridiculous unemployment numbers.

  • Bill Cosby is effing nutzo these days. Maybe he just stumbled in and they ran with it.

Now Chick Fil A, that's fastfood to get excited about.

  • I thought the state of Rhode Island was going to shut down when we got a Krispy Kreme about 5 years ago.  It has since shut its doors.
  • There was a Popeye's in the food court at the mall we went to this weekend.  My H went there and I went to Qdoba.

He complained about his stomach for the rest of the day.  I am glad I had my Qdoba.  Now that is a chain to get excited about.

For REAL. I want some nachos like nobody's business right now.

  • I would not eat at Popeye's if you paid me.  I am disgusted by fried chicken.  My dad loves to go to church fried chicken dinners and I judge him for it and mock him when he orders fried chicken at a restaurant.

    WHOTHEFUCK eats fried chicken??  SRSLY.

  • The blacks eat fried chicken.

And Popeye's is disgusting.  We had 2 and they lasted for maybe 6mths.

  • My sister is black (well, half) and she doesn't eat fried chicken. You must be mistaken.

I will agree with this when discussing fast food fried chicken, but come down here and eat some sweet little southern grandma's fried chicken and it will be worth it for sure.

Kay, it's so funny that you mention this.  I was working at a rating agency covering RI municipalities then and they actually considered the addn of Krispy Kreme a positive credit factor.  Umm, not so much.

  • Winged hit it on the head -- it's good for fast food fried chicken, but that's not saying much.  It used to be that the only Popeyes in the area were both located on the same street (Martin Luther King Jr.) a few blocks from each other.  Because that's where we kept our black folk.  The mac & cheese is good and so are the biscuits.

It was a huuuuuuuuge deal when we got a Krispy Kreme here.  There were multiple meetings discussing how to deal with the line of cars and how it would affect traffic.  I don't think it's doing too well right now.

  • I don't think Krispy Kreme is all that great.  Shipley's is where it's at.  We don't have either here though.  Just shiitty Mary Lee's, which is why I don't really mourn the loss of donuts.

Dude, I live two blocks from a Shipleys. When I walk the dog in the morning the air smells like donuts. It's brutal.

I prefer Shipleys for morning donuts and Krispy Kreme for late night "I want a dessert" kind of donuts. But not the regular glazed ones. I like their filled ones. They used to have a caramel filled that was the most decadent yumminess ever, but they stopped making it, so I have lost my desire to go.

    image
  • For some unexplained reason, we have almost no donut places here.  There are no DDs within 50 miles of me.  None.  I haven't even heard of the other places you're talking about.  We used to have Winchells when I was a kid, but they're all gone too.
I think I live near one of the very few donut shops in the city.  Hallelujia, glory be!

  • you guys are such food snobs.  fried chicken is YUMMY.  I do enjoy Popeyes, but not more than the local place we have here--White Fence Farm.  It's a family farm owned by the Hassert's and the fried chicken is DEVINE.  They also have the bestest corn fritters eva.   and 3-bean salad.  and beet salad.

but Popeye does have the best dirty beans and rice.  Sometimes if I need a snack, I'll just get those.  But you have to find one with good employees, it's true.  I have one in my town that I don't use, but if I drive 15-20 minutes, there's one with supurb service.

    image
  • I was very disappointed when I had my first Krispy Kreme. Similar to when I saw Something About Mary, all the hype leading up to it left me feeling hollow.

For less then ten cents a day, you can feed a hungry child.
  • KK sucks.  They all closed down around here.  Who wants a donut that is too sweet to eat more than one of?  The only thing I did enjoy about KK is that when you ordered their coffee, the lids smelled like the glazed donuts being made in close proximity, so you could have your coffee and smell the donut without actually eating one.

There's Something . . . literally made me pee my pants during a scene.  I don't remember which one, but there was pee.  That movie is some funny shiz.

  • I'm with Steph, I thought Popeye's were like burger kings. In both Maryland and Nola I have them on every corner.Drunken Mardi Gras with warm popeye's and some red beans. YUMMM, is it March yet?

If I am doing fast food fried chicken I am absolutely getting Popeye's but no, I mean it is still fast food friend chicken.

Oh and I love their fries. Best fast food fries anywhere.

(Steph, the baby is so big! How are you guys?)
