Anniversary Antics (long, and sort of funny)

Nick and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary yesterday.  We had plans to have at dinner outside at Blue Water Grill.  We get to the restaurant at 7:00 and there is a 30 min wait.  No problem, we'll put our name in, get our little light up/vibrating indicator and get a drink at the bar while we wait.  We both get our drinks, no problems and we hang out for a while waiting for our table.  The half our  mark goes by, still no sign of life on our little light up thing, again no big deal, we're not in any hurry.  Another half hour goes by, and we notice people who walked in after us get a table outside.  We figure, ok, an hour has gone by, why don't we go ask the host what's up.  We do that, and she apologizes, as does the manager, not realizing our thing didn't go off, it must be defective.  We finally get our table outside, it's really nice out (by this time it's after 8:00).

We order another round of drinks and put in an order for an appetizer.  When the drinks arrive, we order dinner.  A decent amount of time goes by, and we wonder where our appetizer is.   We haven't seen a server, so there's no one to ask.  Finally our dinner comes out and is delivered by a different server, and we tell her we had an appetizer, but it never came out, and to let the server know we don't want it anymore.  Our original server comes out with the appetizer in hand and gives some lame excuse about how it never came out, we tell her we don't want it, we already have our dinner in front of us.  She tells us in a snotty tone, "Oh, ok, well I'll have it taken off our bill".  Nick says back "Well, that's to be expected as we didn't eat it".  By this time we're kind of annoyed, but we're not going to let it ruin our night.  It was beautiful outside, and the food itself was amazing, so all is still good.  The server comes back, apologizes again in an insincere way, and offers us free dessert.  Nick and I both decide we don't want dessert as I've made a special anniversary dessert at home to eat.

The manager comes out with our check and apologizes for the mistakes, and asks again if we want dessert.  We explain to him that it's our annivesary, and we have dessert at home for the occasion.  He's understanding, and returns with a discounted check for our troubles.  We were very happy with the way he handled it, but I was still disappointed at the experience we had, especially for an anniversary dinner.  Oh, well.  The food was still good, and we got to spend the night together.  We still have plans to have our dessert and drink a bottle of wine SIL got us for our anniversary last year.  That should be good right?

We get home and open the bottle of wine (it's a cherry wine from a winery somewhere near TC).  We both pour a glass, toast, and take a sip.  We both had the exact same look on our face, and ask each other what they think of it.  It's the worst wine we've ever tasted!  Haha.  It seriously tastes like cough syrup.  At this point, it's almost comical.  We have a bad dinner experience, and the wine we had been saving for a year is bad.

On a good note, we were both really happy with our little gift exchange.  I got him a little bottle opener that fits in a wallet (the size of a credit card) with a cheesy engraving, and he got me a pair of silver hoop earrings, which I love.  The dessert I had at home was really good too.  We had mini strawberry shortcakes.  Delish.

All in all, the night wasn't that bad.  The service at the restaurant was bad, and the wine was gross (to us), but we were happy to be together, and happy to celebrate another year of forever Big Smile

  • Congrats on your anniversary!!!  And wow what a night...hehe.

I'm super curious where the wine was from.  Cherry wine from Black Star Farms is my fave.  I didn't know wine went bad (if the bottle has never been opened, I mean.)  Eww!

  • Ugghh...I hate dinners like that when nothing goes right. Its almost like you are destinate to have everything go wrong. Kudo to you for keeping a good attitude about it and not letting it ruin your night.

    Happy Annv.

where did you get the bottle opener. That sounds cool.

I can't remember where it was from.  I don't think it went bad, it just didn't taste good to us, even though I suppose it could have gone bad.  It didn't have a date on the bottle, so we didn't know when it was produced.

We're more traditional grape wine people.  I honestly don't think I've had a fruit wine that I liked, too sweet and syrup-y to me.

    Thanks!

I got the opener from Red Envelope.  The engraving I had put on it said "Love is the greatest refreshment in life" - Pablo Picasso

  • Happy anniversary. Glad you were able to make the best of some weird situations. Molly, wine can go bad even if unopened. Most sparkling wines should be drunk within a year. I think the same might be true for sweeter wines. Bad wine usually has a vinegar taste to it. With Wop's description, I think this probably wasn't a spoiled wine but one she and Mr. Wop didn't care for.

Yeah, it wasn't sour or vinegar tasting, just....not for us, lol.

  • Aw, I'm sorry about your dinner and wine.  I've never had a cherry wine go bad on me like that.  It wasn't a port wine, was it?  Port is very strong and syrupy, and several of the wineries in TC make it including the ever popular Chateau Chantal.  Glad you didn't let the service at BWG ruin your night.  Happy anniversary!

  • I think that's a sweet quote for the bottle opener, nothing wrong with a little cheesiness. Happy anniversary to you two and glad you were able to laugh about the mishaps. Smile
