s/o Sweet Valley High

I wasn't allowed to read these books as a kid (my mother thought they were trashy, which of course was the entire appeal!), but wanted to make sure you fans knew there's a new SVH book coming out. It's set 10 years after high school, and you can even read the first chapter here. Big Smile

Re: s/o Sweet Valley High

  • Ha ha ha - I read about that!  I haven't filled out the poll post below, but scanning through people's responses, I was afraid I was the only one who had not read any good lit as a kid.  I was totally into BabySitter's Club, SVH, and even some horrid series called Couples.  I can't believe my mom let me read such trash when I was younger, probably a tween or something like that.  Of course, I also read Flowers in the Attic (!) and tried to use it for a book report in the 8th grade.  My teacher read it, and she emphatically said "No" and recommened some other, more age appropriate books.  I suppose some redeeming authors I read were Beverly Cleary and John Bellairs (LOVED Bellairs, I still re-read his books today).  I don't know if I could stomach SVH today; they were older than me when I read it and now younger than me today - makes me feel old.  ;)
  • i LOOOVED BSC!  my mom read book #4 - maryanne something or another, and didn't like the series b/c she slammed the door when she got mad at her dad.  i probably rolled my eyes or something about that at the time.  but she still let me read them, heh.  i read a few SVH, but not a lot (and definitely didn't let my mom know i did - i knew those wouldn't be allowed!).  I think BSC isn't quite as trashy as SVH though?  oh, i did read a few of the SV teen ones, whatever they were called...

  • Oh yes, I read a couple of the BSC ones - I didn't like them, probably because I thought no one in their right mind would actually willingly babysit (my baby hatred stems from early childhood lol)! I did love reading this blog while it was going though - the recaps of the books and Claudia's outfits are hysterical!
  • I didn't answer the other poll yet, but I loved SVH (and SV Twins) and absolutely adored the BSC!!!  I had the entire series up until about book #80 (when I was way too old for them, but she kept writing more so I had to give up).  :)

  • hi hi hi!

omg i actually logged onto my laptop just to post on this thread! hahahah

i loved svh & bsc! and svt! =)

sandra: that would be maryann like logan or something. where maryanne and logan start "going steady" hahahaha

my cousins and sister and i loved those books that some of us wrote our own series of books too. hahahah

i love how every svh chapter had the description of elizabeth and jessica: something like: "they were 5 foot 5. with golden california hair. elizabeth often wore her hair back, was studious and on the school newspaper. you could also find her spending time with her boyfriend todd or best friend enid. jessica always had her hair down. she had a mischeivous gleam in her eye and often competed for the affections of the bigh school boys with her best friend leilia."

hahahah and then elizabeth had the new best friend robin and enid got jealous or something like that. and then robin started hanging out with jessica and leila. hahahahah

     omg.

then they had the svh detectives series. HAHAHAH we had them all. =D

LOL yes you were! I actually started laughing while reading what you wrote because it was SO similar to what the excerpt from the book says! Big Smile

  • I LOVE(D) BSC and SVH!  I remember both of their shows - in fact I have the BSC theme song stuck in my head right now... not good.  "Babysitter's Club, say hello to the people who care, Babysitter's Club, cause you know that your friends are always there".  I think I read almost every BSC book.  I was allowed to read almost anything - mainly I think because my mom was so caught up in her Agatha Christie books that she didn't care what I borrowed.

Anyone read any of the R.L. Stein "Fear Street" books?  For the age I read them at, they were pretty scary.

Nope, wasn't allowed to read these either. Stick out tongue

I suppose it sounds like my reading was heavily restricted, but it really wasn't - my mom just banned "trashy teenage books" (her words) like BSC, SVH, and all of the horror authors. Oh, and romance novels...although the funny thing was that since I started borrowing books from the adult section of the library at about 11 years old, some of the murder mysteries I picked up were racier than any bodice-ripper - my mom just had no idea lol! Stick out tongue

LOL. I didn't remember that there was a show too. But I'm pretty sure I read every BSC book too. I also read the BSC Little Sister books too =P Did anyone read those??

I also read Fear Street! I remember borrowing them from the library ALL the time. Loved them too!

I did! I loved them. And would get scared at night and curl up under the covers to read. Haha. Quality reading, right there.

  • I was going into high school when the Babysitter's Club came out....I had to Google it to see if I'd missed something......so that explains why I never read them.  I was on to my obsession with V.C. Andrews books by then.
  • Wow, what a throwback! I was obsessed with all these series books when I was younger. LOVED babysitter's club (was there a movie or tv show? if so, i watched it!). I even remember they had special books where they would all go down the shore! Also loved sweet valley high (watched the tv show too), sleepover friends, the gymnasts...i also loved those choose your own adventure books, christopher pike, nancy drew, haha i could go on and on!!!

  • I just got back from vacay and I'm reading the posts backwards, so I haven't seen the poll yet.  But holy cow, did I love BSC and SVH when I was younger.  The used bookstore had shelves and shelves of those... girls like me would read one, then come back to the store and trade it for the next one, and so on.  So I worked my way through what must've been most of both series, but I don't own any of them :(  I do have the SVH board game, though.

Kini, I TOTALLY remember those descriptions of Jessica and Elizabeth in every single book!  Every time I see a size 6 on a rack, I think of how J&E were "the perfect size 6".  And wasn't there always like a paragraph about their car too?  The Fiat!

My favorite BSC book was the special edition where they all to go New York to stay with Stacey's dad, who lives in the Dakota building and everything is fancy in the Big City.  One of the girls orders "fill-it mig-non" instead of filet mignon at a restaurant and Stacey is soooo embarassed.

BoBride - I loved Christopher Pike too!

  • All this talk about SVH, BSC and Fear Street is making me very nostalgic.  I almost want to go back and re-read some of those books... but I highly doubt it'll be as satisfying as it was back then.  The memories will do.  Smile
