buying local in Central PA

as a luncheon for a professional society that i belong to, we had a speaker who talked about the importance of buying locally grown fruits, vegetables, etc. one of the statistics that she gave was that if every household in PA spent $10 a week on local produce, meats, milk, cheeses, etc. that they normally buy as an import it would bring nearly $4.8 million back into our states economy per year.

her organization puts together a guide which has all farmers markets, CSAs, and other farms who sell their products in seven Central PA counties.

i found the guide helpful and interesting. it also has a lot of local wineries in it which was a bonus for me :) just thought i'd share if anyone has been looking for good places to buy local produce during the summer.

I agree! ILs grow a lot of fruits and veggies during the spring/summer months and we get them a lot over the summer, but I would so much rather buy local! I love fresher food. :)

  • Thanks for sharing the link!  With all of the excellent farmland in our area, it just makes sense to buy local.

lindyanne, have you seen this link before?  It is specifically for meats.  http://www.eatwild.com/

  • That's an awesome resource...just to add an additional farmer's market for those on the east shore...the new Farmer's Market at Hershey opened earlier this month.  It's open Thursday afternoons from 3-7 pm and it's in the tents adjacent to the Cocoa Beanery off Bullfrog Valley Road (turn at the light for the Hershey Center for Applied Research).

It's locally grown produce and baked goods.  They have a page on FB and Twitter and I think a web site is under construction.

  • Wow thank you for sharing! I love the Central market downtown Lancaster! The vendors are awesome to talk to and I have learned a ton about buying fresh produce from them!
