I am a huge Wegmans lover. I worked there for 10 1/2 years during high school and college. It is the only place I really shop and I just really trust their products.
Well we were at my BFF's house last week and I spotted a huge coffee container in her fridge and I didn't recognize the brand. I asked her where she got it...Aldi's. She went on to tell me that she gets so much more for her money there (Her company was making 50% salary cuts so she left her job to be a SAHM so they're budgeting money for obvious reasons).
So I thought, why not check it out. Well, it's definitely NOT Wegmans, but the prices might be worth the switch for some things.
I got a bag of fresh spinach, baby carrots, a pineapple, 2 pints of strawberries, a container of grapes, a bag of apples, a lemon, 2 avacado's, coffee creamer (liquid), 16 oz. bag of mozz., 4 yogurts, and a grill lighter all for $26.00. That's a pretty good deal right? I still feel guilty though....but I'm sure I will get over it. I'll still go to Wegmans for some things (chicken and other meat) but I really enjoyed saving money!
Re: I cheated...on Wegmans
Wait and see how long the produce lasts... I am not a fan of Aldi's produce, I think its too bumped and bruised and goes bad before items from Wegmans or other chains.
I dont mind Aldis for things like Milk, and eggs though... you have to sell those fresh.
IMHO about Aldi's....yes it saves you money, sometimes a lot of money, but I refuse to buy produce (goes bad quick), meat and a few other items there. Otherwise it's a great place to buy staple items (chips, crackers, baking ingredients, spices, salad dressings, canned items, etc....).
To answer your question about the $26 spent on those items you bought...I wouldn't say a good deal, but you did save some money, which is always a good thing.
I shop at Aldi every once in a while. I bought a big bag of oranges there in the winter, and they were awesome, and didn't go bad. I would just watch things though. I have no problem buying produce anywhere, as long as it looks good, because we go through it so quickly anyway.
I've never bought fresh meat there, but I did buy a bag of frozen fish that I thought were good. My favorite purchases there are their version of Rotel (diced tomatoes and green chilies) which is 49 cents a can or something, and the can is a normal size can. Real Rotel is a small can, and $1.09 - 1.50 at Wegmans. I also buy "Fiber Now" bars at Aldi, and they taste just like Fiber One.
The only thing I really didn't care for from Aldi was the chili powder I bought, but it was $1 for a big thing of it, and it's not *bad*, I can just tell the difference from the McCormick I usually buy. I still use it though, but won't buy it again.

All of you that have Wegmans are SO lucky! I WISH we had that here. We are stuck with Price Chopper and Hannaford instead. We do have an Aldi's but I didn't care for it.
My sister used to shop at Aldis until she started to notice mold on the produce. She stopped after that.
Maybe I'm a snob, but I will only shop at Wegmans for things like produce and meat (and usually everything else as well. I avoid Walmart at all costs.) I love how Wegmans always has local produce in the summer, and I've never had a bad experience with any of their products.
