Help me rationalize (Long, sorry)
As most of you know, I've been looking for a teaching position for this coming school year. I had a .5 job last year as an overflow K teacher and just got a call from our new principal that my job has been approved to be back for this coming year.
The dilemma:
I accepted a job as a pre-K/pre-school teacher in the city next to mine about a month ago. It's not what I want to be doing, but at the time it was a for sure job.
Now that my .5 job is open I'm trying to decide what to do. Do I quit the pre-K job and take the K job? Or do I stay with the pre-K job?
- They both pay about the same- K job is half days, 5 days a week. Pre-K is almost full-time, all day 4 days a week.
- K job is about 10 min from where H and I live. Pre-K job is about 30-45 depending on traffic.
I interviewed for a full-time 3rd grade job today and will find out tomorrow or Wednesday if I got the job. I told the principal this when he called and he gave me his cell number and said to call him as soon as I found out (because he knows I really want full time).
If I don't get the 3rd grade job I don't know what to do. Do I keep the pre-K job (not in the school district but a for sure job Sept-May) or do I take the K job that means I'll be job hunting next year but gives me another year in the school district?

Ugh, that's hard. I guess it depends on what you want. I had a few jobs offered to me, but they were either half-time or they were self-contained behavior disorder units. I didn't want to start my career in the self-contained route because it is hard to get out of. So, I took a job in a charter school because that was the job that fit what I wanted more for my first year.
I guess my point is you need to do what is best for you. If you want a guaranteed job for the next year take the pre-K job. If you are really holding out for the school district take the half time, especially since it is around the same pay. At least you are in the district and getting exposure to their policies. Plus, if something full-time presents itself, you will have a better chance than coming from outside the district.
Vibes coming for you to get the 3rd grade job though! I hope that gives you a little bit of a view. I don't know how much help I was!
Gosh, that is a hard call. I would say go with where your heart is.
On one hand, I would hate to call the preschool director and tell her that you cannot start the new school year. (We just had a teacher do that (school starts next Mon) and our director was frantic & scrambling. Thankfully she found someone who just quit her other job to come work for us.)
On the other hand, hopefully your director will be understanding and know that the other position is more suited toward your degree and goals.

Based on your other options, if it were me, I would choose the half day job! You need some connections!!
