Okay this is my last weekend before going back to work (teacher). I convinced DH we should go away for the weekend. We've had a bit (actually more than a bit) of a rough patch this summer and I thought going away would be a nice way to end the summer and just spend some fun time together.

Well on Sunday my cat Millie started limping. Took her to the vet Monday and she has a hairline fracture of her right front leg. We've had to keep her rested, which pretty much means in her crate or our Master bedroom closet. We also have to give her 2 meds twice a day. She's doing a little better but will need meds for the rest of the week, and still needs to be watched. My sister would keep her for us for the weekend, but I started thinking last night that's really not fair to her or Millie. Poor Millie is being traumatized enough between the pain, the vet visit, being kept in the closet, and having to take medicine. (BTW-medicating a cat is not fun) She's already shy and skittish so I'm sure this isn't helping. It's also a lot to ask my sister as far as trying to watch her and give her the meds.

So should I give up my dream of a nice, relaxing weekend away? Crying

Are the meds in liquid or pill form? How are you giving them? We've had some meds that have been a total PITA to give our cats and I wouldn't feel right having someone else doing it b/c it can be a real challenge. The liquids are the worst. The pills we have some good methods that are pretty easy and work, if you need suggestions. Does your vet offer boarding? If so, I think that's what I'd do. Millie is probably going to be pretty miserable regardless due to the confined space so I don't see that there'd be much of a difference in having the vet keep her vs. you stay w/ her.

First I think you and DH should do something this weekend special for the two of you, especially if you had a rough patch. So if that means leaving the cat with your sister, I think you should do that. Really it will only be a few days so I don't think it will be overly traumatic for Millie. Maybe you could find a pet friendly hotel/bed and breakfast where you could take Millie with you, if she wouldn't ruin the mood too much. Option #2 is a stay-cation. Could you do a movie marathon with DH? Or do the touristy things in Raleigh that you have always meant to do but haven't yet done? Or each plan a date night for one another for Friday and Saturday?

I would still take the trip. If your sister is aware of how much work taking care of Millie will be and still wants to watch her, then let her. Millie will be fine for a few days with someone else. Y'all need the time together.

I think you should go away with DH. I know how hard it is to leave an injured pet. I had to leave my greyhound with a petsitter a few summers ago when she had a fracture and splint but it all worked out fine. If you or your sister are uncomfortable with the set up I think pp's suggestion of boarding her at the vet is a great compromise. But you should definitely take some time away with DH before your hectic work schedule resumes. GL!

I have to clarify that the reason that I wouldn't feel right about someone else doing it isn't the inconvenience it would put on them. It's the fact that sometimes we have to be quite firm, almost rough, to get meds in our cats. If it's a liquid or a big pill that has to be shot into the back of the throat, I don't think I'd be OK with a non-professional who isn't as familiar with our cats and their responses doing it. We know when it's alright to try again or when it's pointless to continue and what ways to hold them that works. Most often, I give our cats meds b/c my DH can't even get them in. If it were a smaller pill or powder, I would def. be OK with someone else doing it if you can put the pill in a pill pocket or crush it up and mix it with some wet food so Millie thinks it's a treat.

I would consider boarding the cat at the vet and still going on your trip. Depending on what is involved in giving Millie her medicine I probably would not ask someone else to do it.
