What are you reading?

It seems that our book club didn't really take off - but I'm always open to book suggestions from all of you!!  I just finished reading "Brava, Valentine" by Adriana Trigiani (I would recommend ANY of her books - she's great) and loved it.  What are you reading now?  I need a new book for the beach this weekend!!

Re: What are you reading?

  • I'm currently reading "The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet". I never remember authors. It's good, but not a great beach read.

Also just finished "Sarah's Key" which is ridiculously depressing but an incredible book. If you haven't read The Help yet it's absolutely imperative that you do that, too :)

  • I am currently reading health-related stuff so I'm not sure that's the best beach reading but it is very interesting! It's called Eat Right 4 Your Type (The blood type diet) by Peter d'Adamo. I find it is accurate for both me and DH that if we avoid the "Avoid" foods we do better health wise/weight wise.

  • Rachel and I must have the same taste in books.  I loved Sarah's Key and The Help, I think they are my favorite books I've read in the past year.  And I just ordered Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet from Amazon yesterday!

I just finished reading the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. I liked it but don't think it lived up to the hype. For all three books, I found that the first half dragged and the second half was much better. Overall I think the books were too detailed and had too many distracting side stories - especially the third one.  The main storyline and characters were great though.

I've been lurking on the Nest book club board, there are some good recs over there.

  • Oh, I agree The Help is a must read. Very good! I just finished Little Bee it was also very good but not a great beach read. Right now I'm reading The Known World. It's taking me a while to get into it and not a beach read either. I'm looking forward to reading The Hotel on hte Corner of Bitter & Sweet. I've heard it's very good.

  • Oh, I forgot about Little Bee, I liked that too.  Also American Wife - I think - the one that's loosely based on Laura Bush?? There are so many books with Wife in the title I confuse them.

Of course, anything by Jodi Picoult or Jennifer Weiner is always a good beach read.

  • I am reading Fast Food Nation.  It is good.  It is on my Sophomore Honors summer reading.  I like non-fiction, but prefer fiction.

Sarah's Key is on our book list too and I really want to read it, but haven't yet.  I LOVE reading, but get so distracted to do it sometimes.

I also own The Help and will read that eventually too!

  • Have any of you read A Reliable Wife? I was dissapointed. It's gotten rave reviews but I thought it was poorly written & the storyline just didn't live up to all of the praise. If you have read it, what did you think?

  • I love love love Jennifer Weiner.  I just started her newest book Fly Away Home and it seems to be pretty good.  Her books are usually great beach reads.  I saw Laura Bush on Oprah last week talking about her book (don't remember the name) and I really want to read it too now.  I am thinking about picking up Eat Pray Love and try to read it before I see the movie.

  • I'm reading Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.  It's definitely thrilling, but also inspirational :)

For anyone looking for a new author, I highly recommend Neil Gaiman!

  • i'm reading Living Dead in Dallas by Charlaine Harris... True Blood books... though the show doesn't entirely follow the books, which is fine, cuz there def needs to be more going on on a show vs in a book...  this is the second book and so far so good!  i also have new found respect for the characters on the show cuz they are really well at portraying themselves!

  • I WAS reading the Brightest Star in the Sky by Marian Keyes - However I didn't realize that it expired today (I'm reading it on my Nook) and I didn't get to read the last 50 pages. I['ll have to grab a copy at the library now! My next Book is the 6th Sookie Stackhouse book.
  • I started Names My Sister's Called Me at the beach this weekend and so far I'm liking it. I can't remember who it's by, but it's pretty light reading.

  • Julie, I really enjoyed Eat, Pray, Love.  Not sure I'll see the movie (maybe on DVD).   Margaret, DH likes Neil Gaiman!  I think he has a few books of his lying around, I'll have to check them out. As for me, I'm currently "reading" (on Audio CD) some novellas by Diana Gabaldon (of Outlander series fame).  I just finished listening to An Echo in the Bone and am going through withdrawal already (it's the 7th and, so far last, in the series). I'm a huge fan of historical fiction, and seem to only have time to "read" while commuting in the car, so I've put a request in at the library for the audio CDs of Kate Mosse's Labyrinth. Oh, anyone ever read Christopher Moore?  Of Lamb and A Dirty Job fame?  Funny, sarcastic books!
