Cat Problem

This morning I woke up to Buster scratching our bedroom door - he had pooped right in front of it. Then I checked and he peed all over the storage room floor right in front of litter box. This has happened twice this week. I am furious and dunno what to do. I plan on going to the pet store tonight and getting cat litter and completely dumping his box out and putting new litter in there and see if that works. Sound like a good idea? And now I have to get a new brook too since he peed all over that.

Re: Cat Problem

  • How often do you clean his litter box?  (ie: not just scooping it, but dumping it out, washing w/ soap and refilling w/ new litter)

The two most common reasons for this kind of behavior are dirty litter box (cats have a sensitive sense of smell) and urinary tract infection.

Have you had any recent changes in your house?  New furniture?  New placement of litter box? That can affect things too.

Hope you can figure this out soon!

  • I haven't completely cleaned out his litter box like stated above. I am going to try that tonight and see if that solves the problem. Thanks.

  • Do you have more then one cat?  Some cats require their own litter box and don't like to share.

Also some cats like to have a fresh box.  Requiring us to scoop daily and dumping and scrubbing the box as often as once a week.

If those things don't fix the problem it might be health related and a vet trip would be in order.

Good luck, I hope it isn't anything major.

  • Have you changed litter brands or types of litter lately? Cats are really sensitive to changes like that, for example, we were having trouble with our cat not using the litter box. We now only use unscented litter, and got a second litter box for her, and she's doing great.
  • If she keeps having the problem after changing the litter, I'd take her to the vet just in case.  This happened once and the cat had a UTI.

GL - cat pee is the WORST :(

Yeah just an FYI, UTI's in cats (esp. in boys) can be fatal.  So that is why a trip the vet may be in order. Good luck.

  • You know how small my house is and I have to have 2 litter boxes. Also, they get scooped out every night and completely changed and washed about every 5 days or so.

I am going to completely wash out and put all new litter in there and go from there. I think I am going to scoop out every other day and see how that goes. The every 3 days was working but now it night need to be every other day.

  • You might seriously want to add another box too.  My two cats used to be fine with one box, but then we started having problems with one of them going outside of the box.  I added one more box and we haven't had any problems since then.

And I agree that a vet appointment is in order if you have anymore problems with this.

    Good luck!

  • I have two boxes but Simba seems to go between the two boxes for some reason. LOL. If the washing out and all that doesn't solve the problem, off to the vet we go.

  • We have an automatic litter box. It's amazing. It scoops for you, then every 3ish weeks, the H changes the entire box.
