Name Change?

What do I do first...Social Security?  DMV? Do I need to go anywhere else>

Re: Name Change?

  • SS.  DMV needed to see my new SS card before changing my stuff.  It took maybe 2 weeks to get my new card.
  • Ditto Tammy. Don't forget the Post Office for your passport.
  • I went to SS first...if I remember correctly I went straight from there w/ the paper they gave me as a "temp card" to the DMV and was able to change my license

  • I went to SS first & then right after went over to the DMV. Didn't need to wait for my card, just gave them the receipt I got from SS.

Yes, & don't forget your passport!

Also, banks, credit cards, insurance, car...... ugh...it's overwhelming! I'm still not 100% changed over!

  • Same as everyone else.  SS first then DMV.

Ditto all of this... even the part about not being 100% changed, lol!

Also, you're supposed to notify the 3 credit bureaus since changing your name on your CCs might not carry over right away.

    Anniversary
  • Ditto everyone. SS first, then take the receipt to the DMV to get your new DL.

I'm *mostly* changed over....I've done everything except work which is being a frigging pain in the arse since it's a governmental agency. I have to fill out 80 bagillion papers and have been procrastinating.

  • I went to DMV. Still havent done my SS card. DMV just needed my old SS card, our marriage license, my old license and my birth certificate. :)

  • Can I admit that other than my ss card, dl, passport and insurance, I have changed nothing. No credit cards, phones, mortgage, etc. It's been 9 months.
  • Yeah SS first. I had to wait a day for the DMV because they had to wait for it to change in the computer system from SS.  It totally depends on the state I think.
