Re: recommend your camera!

  • Are you looking for a point and shoot? I LOVE my Sony Cybershot. It's a few years old, but has been great. My sister got a newer and loves hers too. It takes great pictures and it takes fast pictures -- I'm always the one getting the best shot because the camera just reacts so much faster than others. DH bought a Canon Powershot with more options for more money, and he's totally jealous of my Cybershot. :) They are pretty affordable too.

Consumer Reports highly rates Cybershots as well. The model I have and my sister has are both outdated now, but I think they were in the ones in the $150 price range.

  • I have the Olympus Stylus Tough.

Waterproof to 33ft, shock proof from 6 1/2 ft. Takes great pictures, takes great underwater pictures, has a really great panorama mode too. I love that I have a camera I can take everywhere & not worry about it getting wet or dropped.

Got it from the inlaws for xmas for snorkeling on our honeymoon, I love it.

  • I've had good luck with my cannon powershot.  It's very easy to use and it's a good size so it fits in my purses.
  • For a point and shoot, I say Sony Cybershot all the way!  I got mine FIVE YEARS ago, and it still works just fine... and I'm not exactly gentle with it.  It stays in my purse, so it gets knocked around in there all the time.  Takes good quality pics, too!

IMO, the Sony's are slow and the pictures tend to come out fuzzy.

I swear by Canon. (I've had a Nikon and Sony and I regretted it.) I'd rather pay a bit more and get a better quality camera that will last longer.

Are you looking for a small point and shoot or a DSLR?

hmmm. good to know. i don't know too much about cameras... and i don't want to spend an arm and a leg. i would love a DSLR (i think) but i know they tend to be bulky and pricey... so i think i'm leaning toward a point and shoot.

  • I also say Sony Cybershot, I got mine as a gift 2 years ago and I loveeee it!!
Its a touch screen and the phone back shows the picture!

  • My Grams has a Cybershot and loves it - takes great pictures.  I have a kodak but it is @ least 4 years old and it was the only model Kodak made of the dual lens and I love, love, love it.  I wish they still made them, I bought it because of a rec from the man @ the camera store, he said they do not make cameras like this anymore.

i have a point and shoot (~the size of a phone) that i take with me everywhere. if i know im going somewhere that i'll have time/opportunities to take better pics, i'll take my DSLR.

as far as point and shoots go, most of them are going to be about the same. you'll get around the same quality and timing and unless you want 30x50" prints, etc, you won't notice much of a difference in megapixels. stick with the major brands- sony, nikon, canon, etc.

as for the DSLRs, i have a canon t2i. it's equivalent to the pro cameras, but the body isn't steel (has to do with balance, durability, yada yada yada.) i knew it would be an investment in the long run, but i paid ~1500 because i upgraded the lens.

it really depends on what you want out of your photography. HTH :)

  • I love my canons <3

My dad and I both have digital SLR rebels. :) LOVE it. My photographer also loves Canons and all her professional lenses/cameras are canons.

DH, when he was FI, bought me the Nikon Coolpix for Christmas so that I could have a small purse camera and I HATE it. The photos are so blurry no matter what I do. And I took it back once because of it and got a new one: same thing happened. Such low quality.

I love the Canon Powershot. :)

  • I have heard bad stuff about the Nikon Coolpix cameras too.

FWIW, I don't have any trouble with my Sony. It takes faster pictures than DH's Canon and never have a problem with them being blurry. I'd go to Best Buy or something and play around with them.

Also, Consumer Reports is THE best resource for buying any kind of appliance or gadget. Some Sonys are good, some not so good. CR would help you figure out which ones are highly rated and which aren't. I'd also read review on cnet.com

  • We have two point and shoots: Olympus Stylus 550WP and a Canon Powershot that is 3 years old. We broke the Olympus on our honeymoon. :( But it took some awesome pictures. The Canon is great, and from here on in, we will only buy Canon. I have two SLRs - a 35mm Canon Rebel and an Olympus. The Canon is over 8 years old, but it still takes an amazing shot. It just sucks to deal with film! My Olympus is horrible. No matter what I do, the picture is always fuzzy and it involves far too much work to manually get the picture right. I can't spend 5 minutes for one picture!!

  • i don't think i'm looking for anything professional quality. so i think a DSLR probably isn't for me and is probably out of my price range anyway. maybe eventually i'll invest in one. i just need something to take pictures... not really for hobby just for when we're out or something. maybe i'll take a trip to best buy soon and check some point and shoots out. the camrea i have now is a samsung and not only is it falling apart, its slow and that drives me nuts.

thanks for all the info ladies! you all really know what you're talking about and this was really helpful!
