Awkward MIL moment

My MIL and I get along really well -- she's really sweet, but somewhat reserved, so I kind of feel shy around her. She doesn't say a lot, so I'm not sure all the time what she's thinking...

Anyways, DH's 30th bday is at the end of the month. We are having a big party the weekend before his birthday at his parents' house. His family usually does dinner and cake altogether the day of people's birthdays, but I was hoping the two of us could do something special together. I asked him what he thought, and he agreed he'd like it to be just me and him for his birthday evening.

So, I emailed his mom to run it by her, since I wanted to give her a heads up that we'd have to do a family thing another night. I told her I wanted to surprise DH with a brewery tour and dinner, but that I knew it was usually family stuff, so I wanted to make sure it was okay to do family stuff another night.

And she wrote back: "I'll ask [FIL] about dinner and the brewery tour, but that sounds good!"

Guess she misunderstood. I had to write back and say, actually, you're not invited... Tongue Tied

  • Shipyard Brewery in Portland, ME. DH is big into homebrewing, but we've never done a brewery tour. I think he'll like it!

  • That is awkward, but sounds like the brewery will be fun!

  • My family is like his, we do Birthdays on Birthdays and thats it. J closed on his Birthday last week & my Mom had a late meeting, didnt get out till 8:30, 9 pm my parents were knocking on the door with his card. Its important to them in ways I get & ways I dont, maybe your H's family is the same way.

Brewery tour sounds fun though! Theres one in Lewiston, Gritty's maybe? I've always wanted to go just to check it out, I dont even drink beer!

  • Oh my.  That is way awkward.  Maybe if you like the tour you can all go together another time?

You guys will have a blast though!  H and I hit up breweries in very city we visit that has one, if possible.  It's always fun, and you nearly always get free beer at the end.  Nothing wrong with that!

Have fun and sorry about your misunderstanding.  I hate when emails get misinterpreted because it always sounds worse (to me anyway) when the email is sent hours later than when you can explain it in person as a conversation progresses.

  • I've never had Shipyard... wonder if they sell nationally.  I want to try it now.

I'm with Whitney.  We tour the breweries for that room at the end when you get to sample :)  We've done Anheuser Busch a couple times, but are wanting to go down and do Shiner.  We are huge Shiner Bock fans.

  • That is awkward!  Hope she is understanding about it.
  • Wow that sucks. I hate when people misinterpret/misread things you're trying to explain :/

I want to know what her response was!!!!

And the brewery sounds so so much fun!! I'm sure he'll enjoy it!

  • No reply yet! Yikes! I hope she's really not bothered by it. I get wanting to see the kid you gave birth to on his birthday, but she's had that for 29 years, and this one is different because we're having a big party for him at his parents' house with his family there, so it's not like she won't be able to celebrate it. I thought the tour was perfect because they only do it on Tuesdays, and his bday happens to be a Tuesday.

I'm excited for the tour! (And yes, we do get a free pint!) We've always wanted to do a brewery tour of Sam Adams or Harpoon when we're in Boston, but never have. We found out after the fact that the brewery in Aruba, where we HM'ed, does tours. D'oh.

Maine has a lot of microbreweries, but not many do official tours. Shipyard is the biggest. I don't know where they sell it, but an LA Times article about them lists places to buy it there, so I guess it's national, but probably limited. http://www.shipyard.com/

Mainemommy -- Gritty's has brewpubs in Portland, Auburn and Freeport. DH actually worked at the Freeport one as a busboy in high school. I don't think they do tours though. But that's his favorite ME beer. Mine is Allagash. :)
