Poll: Favorite Family Recipes

I stole this from the WC board.  What are some of your favorite family dishes that only your family can do well?

My grandmother can make a peach pie like nothing I've ever had and my mom makes an awesome Mac N Cheese.

On DH's side, my MIL's sauce recipe is a secret family recipe that I've only just been privy to.  DH's grandmother's Chocolate Nut Balls were a favorite although I never tried hers.  We tried making them over the weekend and they came out really yummy although not quite like hers I'm sure.

  • On my mom's side, it's all Polish foods- kapusta, pierogis, etc plus some really good Christmas cookie recipes.  My mom makes a chicken and gravy dish that I love.

My dad's side would need written instructions to turn on a stove so there aren't any recipes.

My DH's mom makes an awesome German potato salad.  And DH has a ton of great recipes he's created.  He started writing a cookbook that he's going to give to Eva when she leaves home.

  • My dad makes great SOS ;-) Anyone else have a parent that was in the service?

My mom's potatoe salad is my favorite.  She also makes what we call 'stuff-a-buns'.  They are awesome and will always remind me of childhood.  My aunt makes really really good black bottom cupcakes.

K's family CAN cook! Her sister S has a cheesy potatoe recipe that she refuses to share with me but I'm slowly wearing her down ;-)

  • My mom's side makes great Polish food too.  I love making pierogi with my aunt.  My mom also made this really good green bean dish with chicken and sherry.  Unfortunately, she had it written in a cook book that when she died was either given to her boyfriend or we just lost :-( I loved that recipe.

DH's mom is a good cook.  He LOVES her food, I like it but not nearly as much as him.  However, he has asked me to start cooking with her so I know how to make things like she did after she dies.  He loves her chili, chicken soup, Spanish rice, and bolognese sauce.

AHHH SOS gives me nightmares. When I was like 7, my sis and I stayed with my grandmother for a week without my parents. My gramndmother made us "SOS" for breakfast one day, and all I remember is a piece of toast and what looked like throw up on top. My sis and I refused to at it, and called our mom, who yelled at my grandma for feeding that to us.

  • I love my moms potato salad recipe... she puts apples in it, and whenever I make it for a function people comment on how good it is!

On my dads side, they all make delicioso puerto rican food. I try to make it, but I dont do as good of a job as my grandmother.

  • My mom's side has a family sauce recipe that is wonderful. It's kinda secret but when I got married I got to have it. :)

My maternal grandmother makes a pork chops w/tomato soup recipe and rice pilaf that is awesome.

My paternal grandmother had great recipes for banana bread and chocolate mayonnaise cake that were passed to me after she died.

Jeff's mom doesn't really like to cook...his grandmother did but her recipes are kind of lost since she passed 10 years ago.

  • My grandma's gnocchi recipe is a family tradition.  She passed away a few years ago, but I try to make it every holiday and whenever family gets together.  It is, quite possibly, the perfect food.  :-)

My mother's chocolate cookies are to die for.  I can't make them as good as she can, but my sister can!

  • My mom was the world's best "comfort food" cook. Meatloaf, holiday dinners, mac n cheese, anything baked- especially pies and her famous blueberry coffeecake.

One of my favorite cookbooks is one my sister gave me of recipes in my mom's handwriting of all the family faves-  nothing fancy, but it is awesome- hot cross buns, goulash, twinkie cake, lasagna and the famous "corn thing" from Thanksgiving- a corn casserole that we never really could figure out how it was made.

Dh's family -  not so much. When we "have" Thanksgiving at his parents we go out to eat :-(   That makes me sad.

  • My mom is a really good cook.  She can bake just about anything, and she makes a three bean salad that no one else can beat.  My dad makes a killer london broil.  Together they make this fantastic spaghetti sauce and salsa that they then can.  They only do it every few years, but both things are amazing, so worth the time/effort.

On DH's side, they cook lots too, but I can't think of any stand out dish really.

lol! I can't imagine trying to give it to a child for breakfast! My dad only made it every once in a great while and it was always for dinner.
