Just read your whine wednesday post and wanted to let you know about my doggie. Last year at this time I found a tumor on her leg and it got biopsied and ended up being a mast cell cancer tumor. It's on a weird part of her tendon/muscle where taking it out would cause more harm than good.
The vets (found it about 2 weeks before our move down here, so the NY vet and NoVa vets both agreed) said that dogs can go years with mast cell tumors and they can just stay they way they are and not cause any problems. It's only been a year (and she's super old -15!) but she's been totally fine with it. I feel for it on her leg every few weeks to make sure it hasn't gotten bigger or anything, and keep an eye out for any limping/weird movements on that leg and she's totally fine.
She could have had it for even longer and we just didn't know. I found it because it was harder and very lumpy under her skin, which they said was because it was inflammed, they gave her an anti-inflammatory med, and it almost completely disappeared. I know where it is and can feel that it's "squishier" than the rest of the muscle on her leg, but had it not had the inflammation I never would have known about it. So, she may have had it much longer and we just never noticed.
Anyway, that got long, but wanted to let you know that a tumor, even a cancerous one, can turn out just fine!
Re: ..::GLL::..
awww! thank you SO much for posting!
I am really sad...the way she said it was so depressing..."well, it's either a bug bite or cancer. so what would you like to do?" meanwhile, my poor pups is just sitting there giving me the eyes...gah.
it's really great to know that you have such a happy story! I hope she continues to do well with it and 15 - wow...that's amazing! you're very lucky!
i obviously hope it's just a bug bite but it's hard to think about it being something else. time will tell!
and thanks again - it made me feel better!
I was pretty sad too when we found out, I was like what do you mean it's cancer? And you're just going to leave it in there??? Seriously!?!? But, it's been totally fine. I was super obsessed with checking it at first (like every day), and now I'm just like, well, clearly it's not bothering her, or causing her any harm. Now I check weekly, or even sometimes every other week.
Let me know how it all turns out!
