I can't believe that you're starting the school year so close to your due date!!  I think I would've been really tempted to just not go back until after maternity leave.  Of course, I understand that this way, the kids get to see who you are before you leave...but still!

How long is your maternity leave?

Re: **Jessica

  • I get 6 weeks off for maternity leave.  We have a fall break the first full week in October, so that's like a bonus 7th week for me.  I will only have to go back for a couple of days at most between the 2 breaks.
I could take longer, but I would have to take it unpaid and then without insurance, and we can't afford that right now.  And, if I take days off now before he's here, I would have to use sick days.  I've been home with John since early July, and he'll be home with me for most of my leave, so it's nice to get some time away from him.  lol
Today was the first day with kids, and it was fine.  My sub is coming to shadow me tomorrow, and she's getting student teaching credit rather than money to be my long term sub, so she may start student teaching on Friday or Monday.

    Thanks for asking!

(sorry for the long post...but that should be expected from an English teacher)

  • I was wondering that too. That is sad you don't get longer, but we couldn't go without the pay or insurance also. Glad your first day went well.

  • Maternity leave for teachers sucks.  I hate that most schools/districts only give six weeks.

It'll be great if she can start teaching this week already!

  • I feel your pain with the unpaid. My 4 month leave with Emmy was all unpaid. I doubt I will be able to take that again with this one, and it makes me sad. :(

  • I understand that completely. When I have my not yet concieved baby I will only get 6 weeks off for maternity. And if I want more I will have to take it without pay....we would still get out insurance. It really stinks.
