Super scary (for lawyers, mainly)

This weekend, I went to Wal-Mart (I know, but I needed mascara and they're the only place that has the brand I like, and Target didn't have any wall sconces so I decided it wouldn't hurt to check).

Anyway, a guy I went to law school with was working there as a greeter. It did not look like he was working in any sort of managerial capacity.

In all candor, I do not know if this guy passed the bar (or even what his name is), but if that's the state of legal jobs in my community, we're screwed.

Re: Super scary (for lawyers, mainly)

  • We saw this for engineers who graduated from Spring 2002 - Spring 2005 in the bay area, I knew numerous people who graduated from Cal Poly (prestigious Engr program) and were working at box stores and supermarkets because they couldn't get jobs because people with 5-10 yrs experience were going after entry level positions.  We cycled out of it so hopefully you will too.
  • Ugh. I'm so terrified of losing my job. At least I'd have about 6 weeks notice. I actually had to work at Target around Christmas time because I hadn't yet found a lawyerin' job. It was not fun. The worst part was the coworker who thought I was NINETEEN freaking years old. I so can't go through this again.

  • I don't even want to know how many ex-Big 3 engineers work retail. Especially Home Depot/Lowe's. Just the other day I was talking myself out of depression by saying if my DH got laid off he could always get a short-term job at Home Depot. But then I thought, "oh wait, everyone else already did that."
  • A big problem this year is that retailers arent supposed to be hiring in the numbers we are used to becuase it is supposed to be such a crappy holiday shopping season. So it may even be hard to get a crappy retail job at this point.

I am sure there are plenty of people in my industry working retail right about how, so if I get laid off they will have already snatched up the good retail work LOL

  • I know, Dev... MIL works retail and her store isn't really hiring for Christmas season this year, and they're cutting pay and hours for both FT and PT workers left and right. It sucks.
  • I had many, many days where working as a greeter at WalMart sounded a heck of a lot more enjoyable than doing the legal work piled on my desk.  Lord knows I used to fantasize about going back to tending bar, which I did right after law school to earn money.  Perhaps he self-selected himself out of the legal market. Wink

But yeah, the legal job market stinks.

Yup.  H got laid off about a year ago, and after exhausting all electrical options he applied to Home Depot.  All positions have been filled there.  Tongue Tied

  • Hell, it's scary for anyone to hear about, not just lawyers.

H is a bartender and he said that tips have been noticeably worse lately. Just another indication of what's going on these days.

  • Yikes, I would definitely freak out if one of my law school classmates was working at WalMart.
