Rose (yes I'm a pw lol)

I will be your professional vacation planner if I get to come along :)

For real though, I vote Japan because don't you have to climb the mountain before you can TTC?  And you need to be TTC with me next year :)

And if I'm not mistaken isn't most of Italy closed in August for vacation? Meaning you might not want to go there.

Re: Rose (yes I'm a pw lol)

  • hahahaha.

The mountain we're set on climbing (Kilimanjaro) is in Tanzania, so Mt. Fuji would be another training run (we completed the Presidential Traverse in NH this June). Due to Alex's work schedule and previously planned vacations/weddings/events, we definitely cannot make it to Africa until March/April 2011.

We were talked out of Cairo tonight (it had my vote) by close family friends. Apparently the weather in August will make you regret leaving your hotel room. So. Yeah. No pyramids.

As for Italy, you're right that most Europeans take their vacations in July/August. The idea was to fly into Naples and spend a few days driving up the Amalfi coast to Livorno, then hopping a ferry to Corsica (where Alex's family has a house), and plopping on a beach for a few days. So basically, we wouldn't be doing the "normal" trip to Italy.

To be honest, I voted against a big, crazy trip-- especially so late in the game. We're trying to buy a bigger apartment (we have an offer out on one now) in the next few months, and I don't think we should spend willy-nilly. Alex is insistent. When did I become the practical one in this relationship??!!

ps- You're going to have to go at the TTCing sans-ChooFam, galpal. Our plan is 1.) BBA (buy bigger apartment), 2.) CMK (climb Mt. Kili), 3.) BY&D (be young and dumb-- for one more summer) before EBR (embracing baby rabies).

  • Well, we won't be TTC for about 18 months so you have 18 months to BBA, CMK and BYD :)

Why the crap do you want to climb mountains anyway?

    :) hehe

  • Because I'm out of my mind. Duh

Last year I started training for the NYC Marathon with Alex (he is training for his 5th right now). About half way through training, I felt pain in my right knee. A trip to the orthopedist revealed that I have 90% cartilage loss in the front of that knee (which will require surgery at some point) from years of competitive gymnastics. Basically I'm never allowed to run more than a 10K-- and I shouldn't even do that. I had to let go of my marathon goal.

The idea of climbing came about a few weeks later. One of my friends is training to climb Everest. I started researching and was totally gung-ho. Alex refused. Why? Because he is sane.  The cost (about $40,000 per person, per summit attempt) and the risk of death and/or physical harm was just too much. Kilimanjaro is the safest big climb. So we compromised.

I like activities that push me beyond the norm. I want to have unique experiences to share with my kids that make them understand who I was before they came around. Does that make sense?

Yes, it means you're insane.  I totally understand though.

I want to go on an African Safari BAD.  Why? Because I want to be as close as possible to animals that could eat me, of course.

The plan is to go to Botswana post-climb to hang with the lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!). I'm pumped. Safari is my number one dream vacation. It will be such a sweet reward.
