College Textbook Question

Do you guys know of, or have you heard of "Renting" college textbooks?  If so, can you point me in the right direction?!?  (Websites, etc.)

I'm going back to school next week pursuing my Bachelors (wish me luck...I'm too old for this) and I was told that the "in" thing now days is to rent your textbooks.

TIA.  :)

Re: College Textbook Question

  • I rented my textbooks!  I don't think I even want to know how much I saved... it was only $17 per credit hour.  Sadly, I don't think I can help since the rental program was run through my university's books store.

Have you tried B&N online?  DH bought a lot of his books through them for his Masters and was able to sell them back for a small chunk of change at the end of the semester.

  • You could try Chegg.com though I have never rented any. I always buy mine online for cheap, and then resell them if I don't want them. Use dealoz.com and it will list tons of sites & the prices and shipping costs. Good luck!!

  • I guess I've been out of college just long enough to have never heard of this - sounds like a great idea though! I always dreaded finding out the cost of my books for a semester.
  • Wow, I only graduated 4 years ago and never heard of this, pretty cool. I just wanted to say congrats and GL!

  • I've never heard of it, but a lot of books are also available electronically now.  Most of my classes (and this was only a couple of years ago) had electronic books you just down loaded.  Personally, I hated them even though they were cheaper, and ended up buying the paper copy anyway.  I just couldn't study looking at a screen.

I think it's awesome you are going back to school.  It is NEVER too late!  I had an 80yr old in one of my classes.

  • Sorry I'm no help since my mom works for Follett Library Resources which is a textbook distributor and luckily the one the college I went to used so I always got a nice discount on all my books :)

But more importantly, good luck on going back to college!  You'll do great!!

  • I've used Chegg.  They're fantastic, half the price of buying plus free shipping.  And for every book you rent, they plant a tree :)
  • Not sure about renting them but I did buy them for dirt cheap.  Try www.amazon.co.uk.  I saved about $110 on one and $50 on another.
  • I was just on ebates.com, and they have Chegg listed as one of their cashback sites. So check out them or fatwallet, who also had a coupon code listed:

  • I randomly heard of Chegg on the radio the other day as a rental site.  Good Morning America has also been doing a back to school saving thing and yesterday was college and they mentioned the rental stuff - so you might be able to find other options there too.

SO jealous that the bookstore doesn't have the monopolies any more!

  • Thanks ladies!  I've checked out Chegg and they have one of my Physics book as low as $72 for a used one, and $42 to rent for the semester.  The original price at the college book store for new is $138 and used is $84.  Definitely going to explore the E-Book option and see if I can get it on my Reader, if not, this renting thing seems totally doable.  If I can get ALL of my books thru renting them, I think I'd save over 80% for all 4 classes.

    Thanks again!!
