Transferring iTunes library to external hard drive

Does anyone know how to do this?  Our iTunes library is just bogging down our computer, so we got an external hard drive to store it on.  Now, we just aren't sure how to transfer it all.  Anyone know how?  Thanks!

In Step 5 create your new folder on your external drive.

I just did this last night and it took forever to move over 5 GB of music to my backup drive.

  • Also, make sure you keep a backup of your music somewhere too.  Maybe burn it all to a data DVD, or keep a second hard drive.  I only speak from experience.  External HDs can crash and burn if you bump them the wrong way, or they take a dive.

  • Hi - I've never posted on this board but I'm lurking tonight.  I actually did this.  DH and I each have an iPod and I was tired of having 2 computers to load the iTunes on (just how we happened to do it at the time).  You go into the preferences under the edit tab while in iTunes.  The advanced tab lets you choose the location of your library.  Mine is set to H:/NiTunes because that is what I named the folder on my external hard drive.  I just have to remember to plug the harddrive into the same usb port every time since they each have their own label (i.e. E:/ or F:/, etc)

And I always make sure to plug in the external hard drive first (make sure it is running ok), open up iTunes (sometimes check to make sure I've plugged it into the right port and it's going to pull the songs from the right folder), then plug in my iPod.
