I posted this on the Babies board but thought I'd poll you ladies as well. ![]()
I've been thinking about getting a tattoo to represent Will and Dash for a long time - even before they were born. Location probably the inside of my right wrist (I figure I can cover it up with long sleeves or a cuff bracelet if I ever need to). I want either letters or a plain black silhouette and am thinking about either:
Their birthdate in Roman numerals (21.Apr.2010 --> XXIIVMMX and yes I know this isn't a proper translation of the date lol)
ETA: I'm removing this as an option because I've come to the conclusion that even
though the concept is fine, in practice it's vaguely Holocaust-y - which
is DEFINITELY not my intention!

OR
Two little birds (found a sketch I liked on deviantart, then traced it and modified it slightly in Photoshop):

Re: xp: so I'm thinking of getting a tattoo
I voted birds. While I love the idea of their birth date, I don't think I like the look of a tattoo consisting of numbers. JMO.
A co-worker of mine got a tattoo on her wrist for the same reasons. She's able to cover it up pretty easily with her watch.
Yeah, I think I actually like it better in theory than in practice. Maybe there's something ever so vaguely Holocaust about it? (Even though it's in a different place and in Roman numerals...but you know what I mean.)
I didn't vote...I'm undecided as of now. I like the idea of the roman numerals, but it kind of reminds me of being tagged (like the Jews). I kind of like the birds too, but when I see it on the wrist, I see two blobs and it takes me a while to identify what they are.
I do love how you provide photoshopped visuals for us
I wrote my post before I read yours...I don't feel so bad now. I was worried it was kind of offensive...
This is what I thought too. Roman numerals would be different but yes, I do know what you mean. I love that you want to get tattoo's for the boys!
Yeah, I think I might take it off as an option...it wasn't something I thought of until I actually saw the mock up photo...for some reason when I just thought about it (without a visual) I didn't have the same reaction, but when I look at the image it makes me uncomfortable.
Hmm, interesting. I guess it was obvious to me what they were but maybe only because I already know what they are (know what I mean?). :::thinking:::
Maybe if it had more shading/detail? Or did you want something really simple and more shadow-like?
I want something very, very simple - no shading, no detail, just a silhouette.
In the bigger picture you posted, I can easily tell they are birds...I think it is because I can see the feather detail in the wings.
In real life, it would be about 2" wide - this is true size on my monitor, so hopefully we have the same resolution lol:
Does that make it better, or do you think it still needs something more?
Yeah, at that size it is good. I think it was just the pixels on the computer screen that made it hard to see when it was shrunk down to fit on the wrist. As mentioned on the bump post, I like the birds facing the same way so they don't look like love birds.
I am officially voting for birds now.

kaesha, that is so cool! Too bad I can't tattoo the boys yet.
No but seriously, I think that's such a cool idea!
Yeah, I like it better like this too:
Lisa, I like the birthday idea more than the birds. Instead of roman numerals, maybe a different language - like some Australian aboriginal language, so it's less number-y?
Tattoos on hands/wrists make me think of gangbangers. I am not anti tattoo in any way, just my opinion.
The reason behind you wanting the tattoo is awesome, and I like the birds.
I think you should get an image of Will on the left boob and of Dash on the right boob.
That's just my way of making a point about your choice. I vote yes to the wrist. It's the area least likely to change with age. I have yet to see a saggy or wrinkly wrist. My friend got 3 birds tattooed on the inside of her wrist. One for each of her kids (her husband got snipped, so she does not need to worry about expanding the flock and recomposing the art). Hers look like seagull silhouettes... just black ink.
Here is my random tat question. Why do some look so awful and some so amazing? Who is it our HI nestie who has the gorgeous, colorful one that covers her back? So, take that as the best end of the spectrum... then, there is the other end. What makes them turn green? Poor quality ink? Individual chemistry? Should people plan to update their ink every so many years?

That's exactly why I picked the wrist (hopefully not too many people will have the gangbanger thought lol) - just because it's an area that stays fairly smooth with age.
I think that it does have a lot to do with the quality, although I believe that you do sometimes need to get them refilled periodically - I could be wrong? Anyway, that's why I'm planning a special trip to Sydney to get it done - I want a GOOD tattoo and don't trust any of the local artists!
I'm not sure they have those kinds of dates in any of the languages (I think they're more along the lines of "one, two, many" and "today, yesterday, a long time ago"). Also, there is still a lot of racial tension in Australia and I can guarantee that a white chick co-opting an Aboriginal culture for a tattoo would NOT be well received.
