Need help organizing bathroom/linen closet

We just moved to a new house & I'm trying to figure out a way to organize our bathroom/linen closet.  Dh painted it last weekend since it stunk really bad from whatever the previous owners were keeping in there.

Our bath only has a pedastal type sink so there's no cabinets for storage for all of my bathroom 'junk'.  (We have built in mirror vanities that fit the necessities - hair stuff, deodorant, etc.)  There is a large closet with shelves in the hallway right next to the bathroom where I've put all of the stuff that used to be in our bathroom cabinets - medicine, lotions, misc. hair products, etc.  I can't stand how it looks - it's just everything just sitting there - like a pile of junk.  When it was under the sink it wasn't at eye level so it never bothered me.

Any suggestions on where I can get some organizers, bins, or something to help keep this bathroom closet tidy?  It will have all of our medicines, misc. bath stuff and then the lower shelves have our towels and linens.  I don't really know where to start with this... thanks!!

Re: Need help organizing bathroom/linen closet

  • Our cabinets were just big caverns, no shelves or anything.

I went to Target and bought several expandable shelves and plastic baskets, it really helped me wrangle in the small items.

The Container Store also has a lot of differnet organizers good for small items.

  • Our house is the same way...pedestal sink with no in bathroom storage.  Our hall closet has about 5 shelves with space at the bottom.  I bought plastic bins...1 is for hair stuff, 1 is for travel size items, 1 is for replacement items (toothpase, toothbrushes, deodorant. The stuff that we use all the time is at eye level.  The stuff we seldom use is at the very top.  I've learned that it helps to clean it out and tidy it up once every few months.

ETA: Dollar stores and Dollar General are great places to get cute but inexpensive bins.

  • I picked mine up at Lowes around Christmas time for cheap. (Clearanced colors.) Target is another great place for similar bins and they are usually on sale around this time of year (back-to-school).

  • Thank you for posting this question.  I was actually going to ask a similar question.  I really like the suggestions posted here.  I would just add that color coordinated bins really make a difference.  It just appears to be more appealing to the eye.  As someone stated earlier, Target has some great bins and baskets in the Real Simple Line.  I also think that Bed, Bath, and Beyond carries the line.  GL
  • Not sure how much space you have in your bathroom, but Bed Bath & Beyond and IKEA have some small drawer organizers that could go in your bathroom in case you need more if the stuff in your bathroom instead of in the hallway.

As mentioned in a previous post, Dollar Tree/Dollar General is a great place to find bins (especially if you are not sure if that kind of system will work for you, you don't have to spend much to try it out).
