for my niece

i decided tonight that i wanted to record some home videos of me reading stories to my 18 month old niece since i live a bajillion miles away. my friend let me borrow a ton of books that belong to her 2 year old and then i bought 1 book and will send that book in a package along with the cd of videos. i think she'll really like it because now my sis can pop me on the computer at any time and my niece can see me/hear me/and hopefully remember me (yeah right) next time i see her. i saw her last in march 2010....... most likely wont see her again until fall 2011 unless i can swing going to a training conference in orlando in may 2011 and they can meet me at disneyworld :D we'll see.......

anywho, just thought i'd share for any of you who have long distance nieces/nephews. i actually got the idea from our USO http://affiliates.uso.org/guam/ that has a room especially made for troops to read stories on camera to their kids (because a lot of troops deploy to guam) then the USO will mail the video + book FREE to the kid.... i could actually do the same thing, but they only have certain times and i work soooooo....

  • That is so sweet :)
  • That's so sweet! DH's cousin's fiance (got that? ) is deployed and recently sent one to their son. John loves it.

You may be surprised actually, especially if  your sis has pictures of you in her house and talks about you a lot. I don't get to see my nieces very often, but even at a young age, Hanna clung to me every time we saw her. She showed up to my bridal shower when she was about 16 months old and ran to me like she saw me every day, even though I hadn't seen her in a few months. Now she's 4 (I can't believe it!), and she insists on calling DH and I at least every couple of weeks.

*A couple of days ago she left me a voicemail telling me about her new baby brother. She said, "My brother is out!" lol

  • That's a really sweet idea...wish I had thought to do that for my niece.

I agree with Emily, though.  My parents have a pic of DH and me on an end table, and my niece would look at it and call us by name.  When she was younger, and we were at my parents' house, you could see her looking back and forth from my face to the picture.  It was cute.  Smile
