WWYC?

I need some opinions...WWYC (what would you charge)?  I know someone through a local business organization that needs some word processing help.  He's got 18 hours of seminars that he needs transcribed into a Word doc.  I told him I'd do it, but I have no idea what to charge him.  What do word processors make/charge?  I put my old HR hat on and looked at salary.com and payscale.com and the median seems to be about $17 for my area.  It should be pretty straight forward, nothing terribly complicated.

So.....WWYC?

    $15/hour sounds about right...

This was what I was going to suggest as well. Smile

  • are you planning to or expecting him to negotiate at all?  if the median is $17, i would start at $17

  • I was thinking $15/hr too.  We met briefly this afternoon and it's very casual - just a way to help him out and make a few extra $$ for myself.  He says he will "definitely make it worth my while".  And, based on the fact that he told me he was just booked for a 3 day speaking engagement at $3K a day, I believe him!  ;)  I'm sure he'll be fair, but I'll start the conversation about hourly vs an amount for the finished product.

I'm actually pretty excited about it.  The seminars I'll be transcribing are on health and wellness so I'm interested in the topic for sure.  And all of this is getting turned into a book in the fall.  Kind of a cool project to be involved with!

    Thanks for the input!

  • I was going to say don't short-change yourself. Charge the $17 if that's the going rate in your area.  Glad to hear that this will be not only income generating for you, but something that is fun and interesting as well.
  • One thing you may want to consider how you are being paid.

    - If you going to paid with cash or check free and clear then by all means, charge $17 since it's the going rate.

    - If this is a business expense for him or his organization and he wants to write this off as a business expense, you may be viewed as an independent contractor and have to give your SSN. Which means a nice 1099 for you at the end of year and taxes to pay. *so don't short yourself.

    Good luck!

*Eta: not that I'm saying to charge more than $17 but with $17 as a median salary, that's for a regular employee, independent contractor rates are usually a little higher to compensate for those taxes and lack of benes.
