SarahBeth - Celiac Question
My sister suspects she has celiac disease and went to the doctor for a blood test. She got a letter in the mail from her doctor today with her "results". The letter stated her thyroid was normal. I know there are links between celiac and thyroid diseases, but surely they don't test your thyroid levels to diagnose celiac, right? Did her doctor just misunderstand her? Thanks.

Re: SarahBeth - Celiac Question
I highly recommend the celiac.com forums. There's a diagnosis board that will probably be helpful for her.

Villi!
If you want, I can wax poetic about them, but I suspect you don't.
The hair grows in thick where the horn used to be.
I'm intrigued. So, you are allergic to wheat gluten but not other gluten (i.e., barley, etc)? I never knew there was a difference. I think she wanted to start with the blood test so that she knew whether or not it was necessary to look at her intestines (I think they have to do a biopsy and it sounds really invasive). But, I am almost sure they don't test your thyroid for celiac. I will direct her to the forums. Thanks for the suggestion.

Uh, I honestly think I've never had the opportunity to eat barley. I know a lot of foods like Rice Krispies are only non-GF because they have barley malt, but they're also made with other non-GF stuff so I don't chance it. I can eat oats, which a lot of people with celiac can't (although not all).
But yeah, as far as I know, I'm only allergic to wheat gluten. The main difference is the type of response. I have a histamine response, so hives, swelling of the eyes and lips, etc. Celiac is a more long term damage to the digestive system, but the body can't digest gluten so it has more immediate "digestive effects" that your sister probably knows about. The diet ends up being pretty much the same.
The test is invasive, but she'll be sedated. I don't remember anything, and it would definitely be worth it to know.

Well, there's barley in beer. Can you drink that as long as it's not a wheat beer?

No, I only drink GF beers and ciders like Woodchuck and Strongbow.
Honestly, it never occurred to me that I could eat stuff that contained barley. I really am not sure if I should, but it's something I could talk to my doctor about.

Well, to be completely honest with you, beer is not a taste I enjoy enough to tempt myself.
But it doesn't matter, because I googled it and I can't eat barley. It's the same protein. I guess oats are a totally different animal than wheat, barley, and rye.

In addition to the biopsy to test the villi, there is a blood test that a molecular lab can do to test for the celiacs gene on chromosome 6. It is called DQ2 and/or DQ8. Not everyone who has those genes necessarily has the disease but there is a high correlation of people with the disease that have those genes. (Does that make senese?) I think some doctors do this blood test first & then depending on the results will order the biopsy which is more invasive.
I don't know of any lab test on the thyroid that relates to celiacs. I am a student of lab medicine so it could just be out of the scope of what I've learned.... I'd check with the doctor & see why he ordered that test to get a better understanding. HTH
I've been having some weird symptoms over the last 10 months and finally a Dr tested me for celiac/sprue and it was positive. So, she told me I have to have an endoscopy to be certain. That is the only way to get a definitive answer.
I was just reading that celiac and hypothyroidism go hand in hand and I am slightly hypo.
