One of the things a few people voiced concerns about was that the birds seemed kind of romantic vs family/fun, and I totally agree. I changed the direction they were flying and that helped, but when I was looking at the design today it occurred to me that maybe it reads as romantic because of the *type* of birds (swallows). So I did a little searching and tweaking and came up with the following design:
What do you think? I wanted something that wouldn't be interpreted as romantic, but that also wasn't too cartoony (my sons are children but it's going to be on my body, kwim?).
After experimenting, decided I still wanted both birds in flight (vs one flying, one standing as someone suggested) - does it work to have these birds facing each other? They can be flipped, but they just fit together better this way - but if they still read as lovebirds I'll flip one of them.
Here's the original for comparison:
Re: xp: tattoo - update and new poll
Have you thought about a very simple boat (symbolizing your little pirates) of sorts with W & D intials? How about there astrological sign? Pair of palm trees on an island which could also incorporate your love and marriage in HI?
Funny you should mention these, because I'd considered all of them! I decided on no boat because I just couldn't find or design one that I'd want on me (either too ornate or too "cartoony"). Astrological sign - I think it's all pretty much bunk, so no.
Palm trees - I didn't want something with a true horizon line like that (hard to explain what I mean, but nothing with a landscape feel). I really really appreciate the suggestions - if you think of any more, let me know!

BAHAHAHAHAHA that's kind of awesome.
That is great! Hahahaha
Have you seen this site for tattoo ideas? What are your thoughts about a Yin-Yang?
I did look there, but everything seems so cartoony - I wanted something a little more..not detailed, but a little less comic-y? I don't know if that makes sense.
I was specifically avoiding yin-yang, partly because they represent opposites (and isn't one feminine?) and also just because it seems a little overdone to me.
I love the dr. suess tatt....very awesome, but exactly what you don't want, cartoony
I like the Birds and either the old or the new design is great. Sparrows / Swallows are traditional ink and you can't go wrong with them. Very classy and old school, I love it

I'm sure you read the symbolism in this "old school" tatt but they have a great strength for Sailors or Pirates:) so you are still sticking with your pirate theme. I say go for it girl, you seem to know what you like and sometimes you can over think a tatt. I'm actually going to get some ink done on Thursday, long overdue and I can't wait.
Oooh what are you going to get?
