It turns out that they had a couple of emergencies come in (kids in cardiac arrest) that were taken in immediately. Although they could have still done M's surgery, they would have had no room in the ICU for him. So we were rescheduled for Monday, and allowed to leave once he came to and was able to walk and hold food down.
We left for home with M still way under the affects of the medicine--he was like a very happy, drunk 7 year-old. We'll head back to the hospital on Monday morning, after a weekend in our own home.
Honestly, the people at the hospital have been fantastic. They've worked with M so that he understands everything as much as he can. He doesn't really grasp that there will be a recovery period, but he understands the operation, why it's necessary, and all the details of what will happen and what kind of things he'll see and feel. He's handled every step like a champ, and we are much more relieved about the emotional side of this.
As for being sent home today, we are just happy we weren't the family of the kids that needed such immediate care. Sure, it's an inconvenience, but at least we know that M's in good hands, and we will enjoy this weekend as much as possible before he's laid up for a few weeks.
Re: You've all been so supportive
I was wondering about you today. I am sorry that the surgery got postponed but I am glad that you will have another weekend with your happy son before his surgery.

I have been thinking about you and M as well. Sorry that the surgery was postponed but I am happy to hear that he is comprehending what is happening to him. I will send quilted northern your way monday
I've had a very small inkling of what that's like. My pediatrician was so apologetic for keeping us waiting while he did emergency stitches. Um, yeah, I think my kid's immunizations could wait that hour before someone bleeding could.I also felt oddly safer afterward, knowing that my needs weren't dire (new mommyhood and everything felt dire), and that if they were they'd be a priority. Obviously you're getting that cranked up to 11.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
Good luck on Monday (maybe it's actually best he didn't have the surgery on Friday the 13th).
I hope you got some video of him on the meds. You could be famous like David after dentist.
