Delaney started Zantac

After 3 days of her refusing to eat her morning feedings, gagging, & basically being miserable when we try to feed her (on top of all her other eating issues with spitting up, etc. since she was born) I took her to the pedi today who said we'd try Zantac.  If it works he'll consider her to have reflux, if not, he said it could be behavioral, which frankly I don't get at all. She's just under 3 months old.  I can't imagine she's doing this to mess with us!

Anyone with baby Zantac experience have any suggestions on getting them to take it?  I've only given one dose so far and she wasn't happy with it.  I dabbed my finger in it & tasted it myself to see what I was making her swallow and it's nasty!! I would have thought they could have flavored it or something.  The stuff is really bad!

Re: Delaney started Zantac

  • Sorry to hear about Delaney's eating troubles!  My son started Zantac around 3 months, but my doctor prescribed a special compounded solution from a pharmacy that specializes in this type of prescription.  Luckily there was one in the next town.  Basically, it is the generic form of Zantac without the alcohol and with a choice of flavors.  I chose apple, and my son really likes it ... in fact he gets all excited when he sees the dropper coming.

They also have flavors such as grape and tutti frutti.  Probably not much of a help, but if she continues to not like it, perhaps that will be an option.

Good luck -- and I hope she gets better soon!

  • Did they give you a syringe type thing?  I would say put that in towards the back of her cheek and push in a little at a time.  My son's is flavored though...I am surprised they did flavor it!
  • Ugh, that sucks!  I know the commercially available liquid is notoriously tough to flavor - I think the system we have only has 1 that works.  You may want to ask your pedi if they recommend a compounding pharmacy that has flavoring options.  Otherwise, use an oral syringe to put the dose in the back of Delaney's cheek.  So sorry you have to deal with all this!
  • Dylan was on it briefly.  He hated it.  We used the dropper and put it towards the back of his mouth and dropped in a little at a time.  I have no helpful suggestions for you, but just letting you know I was there too!
  • My DS was on zantac as well.  CVS flavored it for me for an extra dollar or two.  They told me they could only flavor it grape.  I would at least try that, it might help.  After a few months he started opening his mouth when he'd see the dropper.  Good luck.
  • Good luck!!! I hope this helps her!

  • I don't have any experience with it but I do hope that she'll start to feel better soon!
  • No helpful advice but I hope Delaney feels better soon.
