Ideas Pretty Please

My mom is going in for a hysterectomy this week  :(  and I am wanting to send her something that she might be able to use while she is out of commission for a couple of weeks. I don't want to do flowers or anything edible which makes it a little more complicated.   I am so bummed I can't be there to help her out after the surgery but I can't get off work right now. Thank you in advance for your help ladies :)

Re: Ideas Pretty Please

  • damn there is this website that one of my coworkers uses it has baskets for all types of things. And of course i can't remember the name of it.  Maybe if you search online for gift baskets or something a website will come up. I'll see if I can find out.  But you can literally type in hysterectomy and it might have a special basket geared towards that.

    GL  Hope everything goes well!

  • Thank you for the idea and well wishes :)   I know its not a huge deal to get it done (or so my mom keeps saying) but still I hate the idea of not being able to be there to help.

  • When my mom had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago, the biggest thing she needed was comfy lounge clothes.  Nothing with a tight waist band.  She preferred drawstring type lounge pants (NOT elastic).  It's the only thing she will be able to wear for about 2 weeks so that would probably be a great help.

And I know you said you didn't want to send food but I diet high in fiber is SUPER important post-op.  Maybe sending her a box of high fiber cereal might just be a nice little touch to the "care package".  Kashi "Good Friends" is a great one!

I was able to be there for my mom post-op, and  can imagine I would feel the same way as you are now if I knew I couldn't!

    Best Wishes!

  • Not sure how long she'll be out of commission, but I'm thinking a portable DVD player and/or DVDs? Maybe some good books? Otherwise, maybe you can find a place that could deliver some good home-cooked style meals for her?
  • Does she like to read or watch movies? If I was stuck in a bed or on the couch or wherever, I would definitely want to read some good books/magazines and watch some good movies.

Other ideas: comfy blanket.....lotion/bath goodies from Bath & Body Works...candles

  • When my mom had her hysterectomy I sent her flowers at the hospital with a card that said something like "Have fun without your innards" haha cuz we had some joke about her innards being removed. the guy at the flower place thought that was funny.

  • one of the ladies at work had a mastectomy a couple months ago and we all put together a huge care package/basket for her with books, movies, tea, a blanket, lotions, puzzle books, candles, magazines, slippers, and i think some homemade cookies/treats...she absolutely loved it. no sure how far away your mom is for you if you'd be able to deliver something like that, but I have heard people at my office rave about the care package website that was suggested above.

If she has family and friends near her, there's also a website called carecalendar where you can set up for people to deliver meals to her...i've used it a couple times for people to get meals post-op so they're not having to worry about meals.  you can put her favorites, any allergies or anything to avoid in there to give people some guidance, and everyone enters what they're going to bring so that duplicate meals aren't provided.

i can only imaging how hard it will be to not be there with you...i'll be thinking about you both!

  • All of the ideas above are really great-- I especially like the comfy blanket and book ideas! I also think a really nice card goes a long way.

Good nestie vibes for your mom!

  • I wish I could remember more about when my mom had her hysterectomy. I was 13 at the time so I don't remember much. I think the comfy clothes, books, dvds, etc ideas are great though! I hope your mom has a speedy recovery!

  • In addition to all the stuff the other ladies mentioned, maybe some super-comfy pillows to prop up on.  I can't remember what it was like when my mom had hers either.

I'll keep your mom in my thoughts!!!

  • I wish your mom well! I think these ladies have covered the bases for me so I have nothing to add other than I will pray for her to heal quickly!
  • Thank you for all the ideas and well wishes!!  :)

I am excited because DH surprised me with a ticket to go see her in 2 weeks when I could get off work.  I may not get to be there right after but at least I can go keep her company in a few weeks!
