Because it is slow...Question/Poll

Since this board seems slow today/this weekend:

What is your favorite gift/item that you got as a wedding gift? Was there something you were really excited for that you didn't get?

My favorite actual gift was our kitchen aid mixer. 4 of my girlfriends from college and thier spouses/SO went in together and got it for us. I was FLOORED. My favorite "psuedo-gift" was from Gabe's fraternity brother. Gabe works in agriculture, and his schedule is always very full in the fall with harvest. His buddy Brian was going to buy us Cubs/Cards baseball tickets (I'm a Cubs fan, Gabe is a Cards fan). Brian knew Gabe's schedule isn't openly available, and because we got married so late in July knew that the 2 teams were only playing a few more times, all too late in the season to be able to have the time to go. So he gave us a check for the cost of the tickets so we could purchase tickets for next season.

I ended up going to buy my spice rack. I really wanted the spice rack, because I hate buying individual bottles of spices (expensive, and clutters the cuboards.) I registered for one I loved, but didn't get. When I went to buy it at BBB they ended up having to order it, so it will be about 10 days before I get it. :(

You're turn!

Re: Because it is slow...Question/Poll

  • Favorite gift:  My favorite actual gift was something we didn't register for.  When DH and I were at my parent's house this past spring, we went to the beach for a few hours.  It was far too cold to actually go in the water, but still fun to take our nephew and our dog on the beach.  While there, I wrote our names in the sand and took a few pics.  I posted them on Facebook later and even had it as my profile pic.  My mom snagged the picture from Facebook, had it enlarged and framed it.  She and my dad wrote a special wedding message to us on the back:

"May your love be as endless as the ocean, Let the sun rise at the start of this marriage And set with a lifetime of happy memories And may the waves never was away your love"

Something we registered for but didn't receive:

There are actually A LOT of things on our registries that weren't purchased.   Having already lived together for 2 years before we got married, there wasn't a lot of "stuff" we needed.  But I will be using some gift cards to finish off my china set AND buy the pie safe I've had my heart set on.

  • My favorite item we received from the registry has to be the KitchenAid mixer, here as well! I've used it a lot already; it just makes bread making, and a lot of other stuff SO much easier. The fine china we received comes in a close second, though -- I just love it!

My favorite thing we got that wasn't on the registry was a couple sets of Marquis by Waterford wine glasses.

There were actually two things that we really wanted and actually kind of needed that we put on the registry and didn't receive. One was a knife set, which we ended up ordering with the gift cards we received, and the other was sheets, which I may order soon, since I still have a couple GCs to burn.

  • Favorite gift:  Well, it's the electric mixer, but we got it as an engagement gift and have been using it for well over a year.  We also love the knife block from our registry but that was a Christmas gift!

Favorite thing we got that wasn't on the registry: The gift certificates to restaurants!  We could use a few free nights out to dinner.

What we didn't get: We got everything on the registry that wasn't discontinued with the exception of some of the china, which we will gradually buy over time.  It's Lenox, and BBB has a sale right now, so we actually bought 6 soup bowls yesterday using a gift card and some cash to get a $50 gift card back!

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.

  • Favorite gift:  This one is really tough! We ended up getting quite a few things that we never imagined people would splurge on for us (HD camcorder, wine cooler, kitchen aid mixer, Le creuset pans (2)). The gifts that we've used the most so far have been the food processor and yogurt/ice cream maker. I heart frozen yogurt and the nearest shop is 30 min away. We also enjoyed spending our B, B, & B gift cards yesterday. Can't wait to try out our new sheets. Super expensive, but so much nicer than what we currently have!

Something we registered for but didn't receive:

After we got the HD camcorder ( 2months before the wedding) my husband decided that we should register on Amazon for something ridiculously priced, but that we actually want.....a treadmill. There were some other things we didn't get: towels, sheets, cooking set, utensils, a gravy boat...but nothing major. So excited to have matching dishes!

  • i bet your spice rack was the one that hangs on the wall and is magnetic, right??? haha, cause we had to order one too. we put 2 on the registry (we REALLY love to cook and have a ton of spices/make our own mixes) and we got one for the wedding, and got the 2nd one ourselves :)

our favorite gift we got was actually 1 night at a hot spring in japan during our honeymoon that one of our groomsmen got us :) but if i had to pick an actual material gift, i would say our punchbowl set because i think it is super cute :) http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?BRN=1&sku=14837299&

as for a gift we didn't get but wanted, that would be the large calphalon set: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?BRN=1&sku=16619191&. we got it ourselves after the wedding with some BB&B giftcards (and a few of those visa debit card giftcards) and only ended up spending about $120 of our own money! and since we spent a certain amount of money on calphalon products that day, we got a free calphalon dutch oven and a $50 BB&B giftcard! so it ended up being pretty sweet on the timing for us to get it :)

  • Our favorite gift was from our wedding party, mainly because it was so thoughtful of them. They all pooled money and bought us a new grill, grill cover, and grill utensils. They also gave us $100 cash to spend on our honeymoon. We felt so incredibly spoiled!

We also got a wall sign with our last name on it and the word "love" written in the architecture photographs. Underneath the word love is the saying that was written on the cover of our programs, "There is only one happiness in life--to love and be loved." It was so personal and thoughtful--I love it!!

We didn't get any of the bedding that we registered for or the Kitchen Aid Mixer we registered for. We will probably use our gift cards on those two things! Overall, we were so completely spoiled and we feel so lucky to have received such wonderful gifts.

  • My favorite gift we received was from the best man and his wife- they bought us the burr grinder we wanted and a stove top moka espresso maker. We have been using it every day- soooo delicious! (Especially when paired with the electric milk frother/steamer I got at the shower... mmm homemade lattes).

Something I was really excited for but didn't get was the Kitchen Aid stand mixer. However- and this is probably my favorite story ever- all ends well! I had a feeling we weren't going to get it (it was the most expensive thing on our registry), and the week before the wedding I saw that Macy's was having a sale on the Classic mixer. Not the Artisan that I wanted, but only 0.5qt smaller and a slightly less powerful motor. (And white, instead of colored.) Anyway, with the sale, the rebate Kitchen Aid was running, and signing up for a Macy's card account to get an additional 30% that day, we ended up paying only $130 for it!!! (Retails $299.) It really was the buy of the century.

I'm planning on breaking it in this afternoon by making some banana bread... mmmmm.... :)

  • Hmmm that's hard. I love our dishes and can't wait to use them. And we got money to use on our honeymoon so that was really sweet. I also love the spice rack we got at my shower.

There were a lot of inexpensive kitchen things I thought we would get and we didn't so I'm kind of bummed about that.

  • Fave: Jaime Oliver pots & pans set! I love love love them.  When we first moved in together over 4 years ago, we just got a cheap set from Wal-Mart because we couldn't afford to invest in a nice set.  My grandmother generously got us the set (on sale, of course) and I love it.

Didn't get: We ended up getting most of the major things we needed/wanted, but I need to finish buying the silverware and a few pieces to the china, but I have GC's for that.  Waiting until the brands go on sale :)

  • Fav gift by far was our invitation framed by our family friend and she folded paper in an awesome design around it with a ribbon! It's just an awesome keepsake and it looks like it took forever! So nice!

Gift we didn't get- little things like an iron haha or the 10.00 each utensils but we cleared our registry with our gift cards!

  • fav: tie between our kitchenaid mixer, the hammock and a canoe

didnt get: only little things mostly. we got a nice new comforter set from bb&b, but not the cute little pillows to match it.

  • Hmmm that is a tough one.. I guess I would have to say its a tie for favorite gift between our Al-Clad pots and pans set which are AMAZING and our memory foam mattress topper which is equally AMAZING!!!

There were a bunch of little things we didn't get, but the two things I really wanted and didn't get were our luggage and the duvet cover for our bed.

  • Our favorite gift from our registry was probably our bedding--we needed it because neither one of us had bedding for a queen, and it's darn cute.  Just got the basics, though, not the shams or bedskirt or even the mattress cover.

Our favorite surprise gift might be the plates our friends engraved with the tandem bike from our wedding.  Or the tea kettle and cups with the real Indian chai tea! Or the old-school dish towels Cody's aunt embroidered with dancing kitchen items.  They're cute and kitchy and traditional.

What didn't we get?  Oh, about 3/4 of both our Target and BBB registries.  We've been collecting BBB 20% off coupons like crazy and were invited to a special night where everything is 20% off.  We dropped a ton of wedding money at Target yesterday, getting what we needed (we both recently graduated college and only own cheapy things) for our new apartment together---which was made worse by the fact that we completely lost our $180 gift card from returns there.

We got one of these from my best friend and her mom... her aunt makes them for everyone in their family, and I absolutely loves BFF's mom's hand-curled invitation.  Ours turned out so beautiful, and I cannot wait until we are all settled in to the new house so we can hang it up right as you walk in the front door :)

I got so many gifts I'm not sure I could pick a favorite... a few that I LOVE are: my limes cutting board from my aunts (fellow Parrotheads" that says "Changes in Latitudes Changes in Attitudes" with a palm tree and a beach chair carved in it... we're huge Buffett fans!  Also love our digital slow-cooker and our chrome Kitchen Aid... another reason I can't wait to get into the new house with our big kitchen... so we can have them all out on display!

While we were so very lucky and blessed and got so many nice shower gifts and a few wedding gifts, I have to agree with Kayla.  I lot of the little things we registered for we did not get... and I was bummed.  The bagel slicer in particular haha!  We eat fresh bagels every day from Safeway and they are not pre-sliced and it's so annoying!  And we didn't get any of our basic sheets and towels (or nearly anything off our PB registry), so we'll be using the gift cards for that.  It's kinda weird too because for the sheets, we registered for organic sheets at Target, Pottery Barn and C&B... 3 different price points... and didn't get any of them :(

  • My favorite gift is probably my KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer - I just got into baking about a year ago. This stand mixer made me love baking even more :-) It actually broke the second time I was using it, but KitchenAid sent me a new one right away. We also got an amazing new vacuum, which sounds so lame, but it's pretty awesome. We have been using this cheap little vacuum for the last two years, and the new one is really powerful and I can vacuum our apartment in about half the time.

I'm sort of spoiled...my mom and dad bought out our registry as a wedding gift, so there's nothing that we didn't get.

  • Ok, so I missed this post and posted the same question just a few minutes ago! Opps!

My favorite gift was a painting from my SIL that she painted for us.  We also love our canvas tote with our last name on it.  I use it all the time.

Unfortunately our kitchen in our apt. is too small so I can use a lot of our kitchen stuff we got from our registry.  =( but the one thing I really wanted was a nice flat sealed garbage can so our dog can?t lift the lid and get into it.  We didn?t get one of those yet, but I think were gonna go to Target and get it this weekend.

  • Our favourite wedding gift wasn't off of our registry. FI's grandpa was a master carpenter- he made everything from dressers to grandfather clocks, toy boxes, etc. He is nearly blind and has severe arthritis now, so he can no longer make anything. Apparently, about 10 years, his grandpa & grandmother (she painted all of his woodwork for him) sat down and made large recipe boxes for all of their grandchildren (they only have 3), to be given to them as part of their wedding gift. We were so surprised, and touched, and FI just loves it.

Other than that, our favourite registry gift was probably the Actifry deep fryer. It deep fries things with only a tablespoon of oil. We haven't used it yet, because we've literally only been home 1 day since we've been married, but I'm looking forward to using it.

Our registry looks pretty much the same as it did before the wedding, we received very few boxed gifts, so there is plenty of things that we will be using GC & cash for in the near future.
