I need a career change. I'm one promotion away from being the "big guy" and it's really not a family career, at all. I thought I loved my job but I've realized it's not the "job" I love, but the people I work with. And I can't base a career on friendships.
What's your job and why do you love it?

I am a gluten-free, gun-toting wife! :P
I love you, Daddy...2/24/1953 to 2/13/2011
I too love the people I work with, but not the job. I currently am a receptionist and I'm sick of people the "office bi*ch). It's always do this, do that, make this, enter that, call here, call there, order this, order that and all for people who don't appreciate me.
Plus if I have to use the restroom, get something to drink, or I'm going to be gone for the day I have to get people to cover my hours for me - I swear it's like asking people to go get a root canal for me. No one ever wants to cover my desk while I'm gone.
But starting at the end of the month, I'm going back to school to be a nurse. Hopefully this job will be more rewarding!
This. I think the job is definitely very rewarding (although can be very frustrating sometimes). I never leave work feeling like I did nothing because if I sat around and did nothing at work I would get fired! I am in my patients rooms 90% of my 12-hour shift, and documenting, which is critical, all the care that I've given them on the computer and in their paper charts the other 10% of the time. There are too many nights that I barely have a chance to sit down. And also, ditto what Deb said about being able to do almost anything in health care with your nursing degree... I am highly considering different types of certifications, etc.
H and I were talking about it one day, and he's always so bored because when he's not traveling to cool places doing the real work, he's pretty much sitting around in his office playing on the internet... he always comes home and says how he did absolutely nothing at work. I think your productivity level has a lot to do with job satisfaction.
I hate my job. I'm a lab tech with not much to do, or the same thing to do every day. I loved learning about science and am very curious, so I thought doing research would be exciting. It's not. My grouchy, crass co-workers don't help.
I'm starting grad school this fall to become a librarian--I'm thinking that since I love books and learning so much, helping others find books and information will be more satisfying. That, and I actually kind of like "serving" people. Like you nurses, I feel really pleased when I can make someone's day better, even if it's just helping them find what they're looking for.
I work in Students Affairs at the university level and I would say I 95% love my job! You have the daily stressors but I really enjoy it. You are working with people who want to go to school (no one is forcing them, for the most part). Its a really neat thing to help someone get a college degree and hopefully secure a better life. Plus, 90% if the people I work with (on an entire university level) love their jobs too and have a passion for it. Which makes going to work a lot easier and enjoyable.
i love my job, most days! i am a reading specialist and it is so much fun to work with kids to teach them to read and help them improve. i also have to test kids to see if they qualify for learning support. this is the part i do not like as much because there just is not enough time to teach and assess. luckily most of the people i work with love it too. i try to stick with them instead of the teachers who b*tch and complain all the time.
i am curious how being married and doing my work will work out. i tend to bring work home and do work on the weekends. but i really want to limit how much work i do at home to enjoy time with my DH!
