Fun shopping in Mpls?

My mom and sister are visiting me from OR this week, and they want to do some shopping on the days that I have to work.  They'll obviously go to the MOA on one day, and we'll spend a little time on Grand Ave. another day.

I'd like to give them a Mpls shopping option or two as well, but--sad as it is, considering how long I've lived in the Twin Cities now---I'm just not super familiar with the Mpls shopping options.  I know I see some cute places as I'm driving through (on Hennepin, maybe?), but I need to know a more exact location so I can send them on their own (they'll have a car).

Can any of you recommend some fun shopping areas in Mpls?  Places where they could park the car, and walk around and spend a pleasant morning?  My sister in particular is interested in more independent boutique type shops (vs. the chain stores you'd find at any mall).

Any suggestions?

  • There are a lot of cute shops in the 50th & France area.  It's on the edge of Mpls and Edina.  Calhoun square in Uptown has cute shops too.

  • They could go walk around Uptown.

  • I love Patina.  One of my favorite afternoons with the girls is lunch at the Chatterbox and a walk to Patina across the street (St. Paul).

  • These suggestions are great, thanks!!

  • Check out this site. It lists different neighborhoods around the cities and also gives info about the stores in each. I think it would help you a lot!

Thanks!  I actually came across this site this morning, after posting about this here.  Gotta love Google :)

     Thanks everyone for your help!

  • A really fun area is the Nicollett Mall in downtown Minneapolis. You can have them park along 7th street - a few parking ramps will waive the charge if you have a receipt showing you bought something while there (Northstar Ramp, Shop & Park Ramp). There are smaller stores along with some mainstream so it's a really fun experience. If they come on a Thursday there is also the Minneapolis Farmer's Market along Nicollet as well :)
