What about Huckabee or Jindal?
I'm curious to hear from you guys.....I know you don't like Palin, but if McCain had picked Huckabee or Jindal what would you have thought?
I'm personally still wishing he had.
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
Re: What about Huckabee or Jindal?
Either of them would have been preferable to Palin. I don't agree with Huckabee or Jindal on much of anything, but I don't question their intellectual curiosity or ability to think critically.
I don't know enough about Jindal to speak on him...but I would've been just as bothered by a Huckabee pick as I am about the Palin pick.
I'm just not that conservative socially. So some of their policies are directly opposed to my feelings...
I do think Huckabee is more likeable as a person. First off, he can laugh at himself...he actually went on Colbert, lol. And at the Republican convention, he was the only speaker that at least showed some respect towards Obama.
My friend just keeps calling Sarah Palin a "Mean Girl" (as in like the movie) and after her speech at the convention, I have to say I kind of agree...I get that VPs are supposed to be the attack dogs, but man...the "He doesn't see the US the way we do," stuff from the other day...Are you kidding me? That made me want to scream.
Jindal is young and smart and very conservative. He has an impressive resume so he isn't as wet behind the ears as pp stated. He would have been a great pick for everyone but us from Louisiana as we were not ready to lose him as governor! And I believe that is why he kept saying he would not take the job. He did just start his term this past January.
As for Huckabee, I think he would been okay as well. Sure some liberals didn't like him because of his "religiousness" but he is likeable guy. In Arkansas he didn't try to rule from the pulpit and was well liked by both sides. I remember in one of my classes when we discussing the fair plan which he supports, the Obama supporters said they loved Huckabee because of his religious morals. Now these were all African-Americans and church is very big in their culture.
My reaction to Huckabee would have been the same. Maybe worse since he actually said he thinks the constitution should be amended to match christian beliefs.
I do not know enough about Jindal to have an informed opinion.
The only difference between Palin & Huckabee is that he completed his governor's term. They're the same in terms of policy. Huckabee is funnier and better at speaking (than all 4 of the candidates) but the vitrolic reaction from the left would have been equally as bad.?
I pink puffy heart Jindal but I don't want someone of his caliber ramshackled to McCain. Jindal 2012. ?
Now wait a minute! I remember many a back-and-forth with you about Huckabee...you always maintained that you liked him (or at least tolerated him) and insisted that he wasn't that bad whenever I said that he was the imp of satan. And now that I've seen Palin, Huckabee seems infinitely more appealing. Are you saying you have the same warm and fuzzy feelings for Palin that you had for Huckabee?
*disclaimer--I know you didn't with Huckabee on much; I'm not claiming you were a big fan.
I don't know enough about Jindal to speak about him.
As far as the religious element, Huckabee and Palin seem the same to me -- both scary. However, I am not aware of Huckabee employing the same kind of cronyism that Palin has, nor was he found guilty of ethics violations. I don't think he'd be making the same kind of nasty "jokes" that Palin makes (and Giuliani makes as well). I'd appreciate it if the campaign didn't have that element. I don't see Huckabee blatantly refusing to hold a press conference like Palin -- nor would he get away with it if he tried. Overall, I would have been more comfortable with Huckabee... but not by much.

I'm sorry but what the hell are you talking about Zoe?
I'm confused. Is the nice white lady Palin?
And no, I have not seen any of her rallies but I'm trying to go to the one around here on Thursday if I can take a personal day.
You should watch clips from the last week or so of McCain/Palin appearances. They are definitely inciting hateful/racist responses by invoking fear tactics.
They are actively painting Obama as "an other", saying he "pals around with terrorists" and trying to scare people who are bigoted towards Arabs by repeatedly using Obama's middle name, stirring up the "he's a terrorist" fears. This has elicited the crowd calling out things like, "terrorist," "kill him!" and "treason".
It's ugly. And it's racist, no matter how you slice it.
Huckabee did more than complete his term. After being elected to fill in a remainder term he then went on to be re-elected twice serving nearly 11 years as governor. That is a heck of a lot more executive experience than Palin or any of the other candidates!
Ditto this. From a policy standpoint, I would probably feel the same way (i.e. PLEASE don't vote for this person!) but I have a lot more goodwill toward Huckabee as a person and I think he would have been more respectful towards Obama. I also think that Huckabee is somewhat more educated on the issues than Palin and quite frankly, he doesn't sound totally clueless when interviewed.
Ah, how quickly we forget!
Huckabee has always been charismatic, that's true, but that doesn't mean he was always a respectful candidate. Remember the subtle mormon slam?
And let's take those extreme social conservative views. Palin may have them, yes, but it is Huckabee who actually wanted to enforce them.
(Note: there's a difference between Huckabee saying students should be given exposure to evolution and Palin saying schools should have the right to teach creationism. Do you see the difference?)
Then with regards to gay marriage, can we say covenant marriages?
There's a reason I kept repeating 'dude be crazy' back in the day. I am a Christian. I am a conservative. And I like Chuck Norris. But Huckabee, as charismatic as he is, is in no way better than Palin. I will accept those who claim they are more or less the same. But you can't compare Palin now to Huckabee now, because Huck is no longer a candidate and is thus free to be his cheerful and charismatic self. But if he were running, he would be an attack dog, just in a more passive aggressive way.
This experience and his qualifications is why I don't see how anyone can say Palin=Huckabee. The only area that I see them the same is in the social arena....which is why I asked...why not Huckabee McCain?
I agree this is appalling. But there is a difference in abusing power you have as an elected executive and killing a dog. Both are awful, but Huckabee didn't kill the dog. Palin *did* abuse her power.
Okay, so that's a no, you don't remember. Huckabee's son killed a dog. Then Huckabee allegedly put pressure on the director of the state police to deny the prosecutor's request for an investigation. 7 months later, that same man was fired, and among the reasons given, he claims Huckabee said, 'I couldn't get you to help me with my son when I had that problem.'
Call me cynical but I think all politicians abuse their power. I don't mean to give a pass to it but until I find a saint running for office I have to weigh out their qualifications on other things.
I think Huckabee would have been a better pick than Palin in terms of experience and likability. I have my doubts on how much he would have run the govt. from his pulpit. I have not done alot of research to see if he did that in Arkansas. But I do know he was a popular governor with Republicans & Democrats in his state and did a fairly good job of working across the political aisle. Of course we are talking Arkansas which like Louisiana has many conservative Democrats.
Wow, no, I hadn't heard those details. Thanks for sharing.
Abuse of power for everyone! Whee!
