I need design help.

This is the bed.  It is a distressed black and has very straight lines except for the back arch.

Bonavita Sheffield Lifestyle Crib - Distressed Black

I really want something like this (refinished in black with some stained details.  I see it in my mind but H and my mom have me doubting myself.  Should I just go with furniture that has straighter lines?  Should I just order the matching dresser and nighstand?

Re: I need design help.

  • I would just order the dresser and nightstand. I personally would hate to pu the time and money in to redoing other furniture because it will never match the pieces that were bought.

  • I personally like mismatched pieces. We bought our crib, but we had an old dresser of H's grandpa and H is almost done redoing it. He just needs to refinish it. It's just whatever you want to spend the money doing.

See, I like the mismatched but coordinated look too.  It won't cost me anything for the labor (FIL will do it, and knows what he is doing).  I am just second guessing myself on how different the styles should be.  I don't want the set to match and honestly if I did order the matching pieces I would have them refinished in the same style that I plan on refinishing this set or any other set I decide I need.

I think it will look great together. Currently we have M's room with her straight line crib and a French Provinical type dresser (they are actually different colors also).

  • I love the idea of refinishing the dresser and nightstand.  In my opinion, they look way better and have more character than the matching pieces in the first picture.  I think they'll all go together in the end and will look quite coordinated once you finish them.

Well if you have someone who knows what they are doing then by all means have them pieces redone.

  • Go with the redone pieces - maybe in a different color than the crib.  We are using a lingere chest in Campbell's big girl room that looks like the furniture you want redone and I am thinking about going bright.  Just do what you like.

This. And I think the mismatched pieces will be more girly looking.

  • I say go for it!  Besides, things will change and such as she grows out of the crib and you can make things more matchy if you change your mind later.
