So I have this car...bright, shiny, red...

too bad it's not registered in my name!

The paper tags expire next Sunday. BF called the dealership yesterday to find out the status of the license plates. The girl that answered the phone could not find me in their system (umm...I bought a car from you!). She suggested we call back today even though the girl that would help us is out on vacation. She suggested we call Kyle PD since we live in Kyle (this may have been the best suggestion EVA!). He finally got off the phone opting to call back today.

Called today...they still don't know who I am. He finally called the sales guy who is researching what is going on.

In the mean time...BF calls the Hays County Tax office (he just changed his plates over last month so we knew who to call and ask). They don't show the car registered to me either (man, maybe I can get the payment sent back to me?). They said that the dealership had/has 21 days to submit the registration info and they had not done so yet. Somebody dropped the ball....I'm not a happy camper!

Re: So I have this car...bright, shiny, red...

  • That sucks.  It looks like you're going to have to stand over them and watch them fill out the dang paperwork, seal it and stick it in the mailbox to get htis resolved.  Sucks they couldn't just do it themselves without you having to stick your foot up their a$$.
  • That sucks!  Hope you get it figured out soon.
  • Gah! What a snafu!  I hope that means they're extending out your temporary license plate.
  • So...nobody called BF back yet. I called the dealership and spoke with a manager. He told me that they are waiting on a check to be signed so they can overnight the registration info to Hays and then 'however long it takes them to process it'. Not the answer I wanted, so of course, I asked how long that would be. He said he was not sure. I think he sensed the urgency in my voice and asked "Why, are your paper plates expiring soon?". Pretty sure I told him this. But I just told them that yes, they expire on Sunday. So...he said that about mid-week if things were not ready then he would call and see about extending the time on our paper plates. I thought this was ok.

Called BF and told him the information. He immediately said nope. Hays County Tax office had told him "Oh, by the way...if they try to extend the time on your paper plates- that's illegal and you need to let us know"....YIKES!

    Oh lovely!

FWIW, I've had 3 cars from 3 different dealerships in this same situation. 1 new car and 2 used cars. Each time they just gave me new temporary plates Tongue Tied I had no idea it was illigal.

  • what a nightmare!  hope it gets resolved asap.

Ditto. Exactly. They have always just told me to "swing by the dealership" and they'd give me new temp plates. Matter of fact, I got pulled over immediately following one of those times...the police officer *thought* they were expired and I was like "noooooo! I just left there after getting new temporary plates because they WERE expired." I got out of the car and turns out he misread the date....sent me on my way and said "my bad." hah.

  • Yeaah, I think I remember reading somewhere that its a tax issue.  I'm thinking it has to do with filing the taxes incorrectly on a quarterly basis.  Tags last what, 6-8 weeks?  A few of those would easily defer a tax claim for a business. Shady!
