How you do store your DVDs?

Just curious! I cannot stand keeping all of these DVDs in their cases. Thanks to redbox and netflix we have stopped buying as many movies as we used to, but we still have a ton and I'm looking for better storage options! Thanks!!!

Re: How you do store your DVDs?

  • I have mine in a DVD case.  I threw out the boxes.
  • DH keeps his in his office on a shelf (he has a LOT of movies). The ones I don't mind keeping handy are in the cabinet under our tv next to the Wii and Wii games.

  • I bought a few under the bed storage containers that are deep enough that they can be stored title side up. I am not a fan of having them on display and they are still easy to get to.

  • I bought little storage cases from Ikea.  It holds about 10-12 DVDs (I think).  The DVDs are alphabetized.  I put the cases on our entertainment unit in our guest room, where we have a TV and DVD. It's out of the way and looks neat and organized, plus, our guests have access to it if they just want to relax.

I have been fighting with myself to do what you have done. I don't know why I'm so attached to the freaking cases!!! I guess I just like having the titles right there in front of my like books. Anyway, we live in NYC where small space living is kind of mandatory in our case and this would really work much better for us. We even have the ottoman which currently hold video game controllers! lol

before i moved to germany i bought what mkbt has and i love the system. absolutely love it. it has also helped so when my husband goes to the states, he brings empty holders with him and can buy a bunch of dvds and immediately get rid of the cases.

the only ones i didn't transfer over were the boxed sets of tv shows that have managed to keep their sets pretty small. i ordered my organizers online and slightly miscalculated what i would need and didn't have time to order more before i moved.

  • Thanks for the ideas everyone! I think doing the slim cases is a great idea. I have no connection to the covers of my cases... if I take them somewhere it will make it so much easier. Plus I hardly lend DVDs to people, and I have tried selling old one at yard sales without luck. Sounds like a great plan! :)

  • In their cases, alphabetical order on bookshelves - yup...shelves.  There are over 300 but we bought 2 of the Billy bookcases from Ikea and they work great.  Will have doors on the bottom half so that most of the dvds are contained and I can put pictures on the upper shelves.  DH is anal about the alphabetical order...so that is how they go :)
  • Yes - when I initially moved in with DH, I had to learn to trim the fat on my belongings, as it were :)! I ended up buying those cd/dvd storage books and threw away all of my cd cases and dvd cases. Now, my grand collection can sit nice and organized next to our fireplace, rather than taking up a load of shelf space.
I honestly wish I had done that years ago, when I was living in a studio apartment by myself, and space was at a huge premium!

The one thing I'd suggest is finding a place that recycles the cases. I wish I had recycled instead of throwing it all out :(
