Removing Odor from Wood Furniture

I was just handed down a GORGEOUS bedroom set ... only thing is that it has a bit of an odor to it.  It's been sitting in an empty house for a year, and prior to that it was owned by an 80+ year old woman.  Any idea how to freshen it up?  It's currently in the garage with the door open to air it out, but what else can I do?

Re: Removing Odor from Wood Furniture

  • Have you tried wiping it down? Other than that, unless you're specifically talking about dresser drawers and the like, there's little you can do that you're not already doing. Maybe pull it out of the garage and let it sit in the sun on the next sunny day?

If you're noticing a musty smell in the drawers, then you can try wiping them out, lining them and then closing them with small bowls of white vinegar in them. The vinegar will absorb the odors but one works well in enclosed spaces.

  • Ditto with the white vinegar and water.  Give it a good wipe down and stick it in the sun if possible.
