My Dog :-( (long)

So I think my dog, Tiki, is going to need surgery...

Two Fridays ago, DH and I came home to find Tiki limping (it was pretty pronounced). I hoped it would go away, or was due to his toenails being too long, but when he was still limping, i took him to the vet the next morning.

The vet thought it was either a knee sprain or a partial CCL tear, and she gave me anti inflammatory meds and told me to come back in two weeks.

Well, Tiki seemed back to normal by that Sunday, and was walking on his leg again... but the n this past Saturday (one week later), I let him out to do his business, and he wasnt even runnig, and I heard him yelp, and then he was back to limping again.

So now I have him on strict leash rest- that is, even in the house he is next to me on his leash, so that he cant walk around, juts lay next to me. When we go out, I crate him (which pains me, because he hasnt been in his crate in years - although he was receptive to it, and ran back in, looking all happy and such)

So anyways, I take him back to the vet on Friday, and I am expecting them to tell me he needs surgery (prob between $800-1800). Im going to try and get pet insurance, but depending on his records, I dont know if he will be disqualified for his knee based on the inital visit two Saturdays ago.

Im also go to schedule him an appt at Cornell, I think to get a second opinion, and second $$$ quote... Plus, Ive heard really good things about Cornell.

Re: My Dog :-( (long)

  • I'm sorry- I think it's great if you take him to Cornell - I've also heard great things. I hope it works out and that he feels better soon. It's so hard to see them in pain- it would be so much easier if they could just talk and tell us what is wrong.

  • I'm sorry about your dog.  Cornell is a great idea!

  • I hope he feels better soon and that surgery doesn't break the bank. A 2nd opinion is always a smart idea.

  • Your situation sounds similar my sisters from a month or two ago.  Is your dog eating normally?  He's not throwing up is he?  Hopefully this isn't the case.  My sisters dog started limping and yelping when he walked around and then stopped eating and lost a lot of weight.  She brought him to the vet a few times and finally they found he had a tumor attached to his stomach.  There wasn't anything the vet could do.  I really hope your dog is eating normally and that it's just something wrong with his leg and it can be fixed with surgery.  Losing a pet is like losing a family member.  We are still upset over losing my sisters dog.  My thoughts will be with you in hopes that it's just something minor and treatable.
  • I hope everything is OK, and your doggy has a speedy recovery.
