Is anyone else's husband...

like this:

We are going on our HM in november (b/c of hurricane season.. i won't go to FL or the carribean when it's in the middle of the season). And today, I mentioned it to H and we talked a bit. And he says, "Wait, how long are we going for again?"  I reply, "A week." He says, "A week?!? That's a long time to be gone!!" I roll my eyes and talk him through it.

My dear husband has never taken a real vacation. To him 'vacation' means going home to Wisconsin. He's never been to the beach (SEEN the beaches in Cali, but never hung out), there are a dozen different things for us to do and we WILL have plenty of activities to keep busy. But he is kind of nervous for going. His dad used to be the same way. When he married stepmom about 4 years ago, she had to deal with the same thing. She said to do lots of activities and break him in slowly with the vacations. But I'm wondering if it's just our guys! Anyone else's H feel the same?

Oh and he is ALWAYS talking about breaking out of the normal routine. He gets bored with monotony (as do I!). He LOVES camping (for the weekend or just overnight) and getting out of town, but for some reason, maybe because he's never taken a real one, he's afraid to go on an ACTUAL vacation!! I find it bizarre, but kinda cute. Smile

Re: Is anyone else's husband...

  • My H is the same way.  When we met he had only been to Washington for a couple days and driven through a part of Oregon.  I grew up travelling and it's something that I love to do.  I love to see new places and cultures.  He used to say that'd he be happy never leaving Idaho again for the rest of his life (a lot of people have that feeling here.)
I knew if things were going to work out for us then he'd have to learn how to travel and enjoy it.  Our first trip we drove to the Oregon Coast for a week.  He did really well with that... And really loved seeing the ocean for the first time.
Last year we went to Vegas for 4 days, his first plane trip.  He did surprisingly well with this too.  And then we did our HM last month and flew to CA and did a cruise to the Mexican Riviera.  He enjoyed it but was stuck at my side the entire time (this was our first trip as just the 2 of us so that was probably part of the reason.)
I think he's started to enjoy travelling, but he's a NERVOUS traveler.  He freaks out at the security check in the airports.  Usually once we're through that he calms down a bit.  But he never truly relaxes.
I'm hoping that comes with time and he learns the true meaning of a vacation. So to finally answer your question, nope you're not alone Smile

  • Aaah, that is cute.  My H is not a big traveler either.  We did not grow up taking huge vacations when I was growing up because we could not afford it but we usually took a week vacation.  I was used to traveling for my job, so I took it for granted.  My H had not been on a real vacation since he had his girls 12 years ago - so I am breaking him in slowly...he is like a little kid going to Disneyland whenever we fly somewhere.  Maybe give your H the list of things you have planned, I am sure he will do great once you get him on the HM and have other things to focus on.
  • My H isn't likes going to new places, its just that he hadn't been out of our home state until he was like 25. Growing up his family couldn't afford much so when we went to Florida a few years ago he was really excited. He had never flown before until he got this job and during his training he was flying all over the country.

Me on the other hand, I grew up taking vacations to the beach but had only flown once. I wish we could take a lot more vacations, we both sure could use another one right about now.

  • C and I are both pretty much like that. We do like going on vacation/taking a break for awhile but we both get homesick easily. We were both born in the same city and have lived in cities that border that city our whole lives. We took a five day honeymoon and it was the perfect amount of time for us to be away. :)

  • Yeahhh.... I'm like that! Well, both of us are, really. Our HM was AWESOME fun, but 7 nights was just a couple of days too long for both of us! lol

  • My H loves to travel, he just never did... because he also LOVES to work... we both love money and have expensive hobbie (having a boat, going out, we both want a pool, etc.) and with his job he gets A TON of overtime if he wants it.. so our honeymoon was the first time he'd been away from work that long in like 10 years.... but I think I am breaking him.. we already have a trip scheduled in March and June next year, and when he is off in November for shoulder surgery we are going to see my parents in Michigan for 2 weeks....
