At what point should you stop using "mommy and daddy"?

I ask this because I was just on FB, and on my cousins wall his mom wrote, happy birthday.... love Mommy and Daddy. He's 29 years old. I guess I find it a little odd since I can't even remember the last time I called my parents Mommy and Daddy or the last time they referred to themselves as that. It's been just Mom and Dad for a very long time.

Re: At what point should you stop using "mommy and daddy"?

  • I, too, can't remember the last time I used that.  I find it rather immature for an adult to refer to their parents as mommy and daddy and for the parents to refer to themselves as that to an adult child.  I do recall, however, in the planning stages of my wedding, a girl in her 20s on another board referred to her dad as Daddy and I called her out on that to be informed that it's normal.  Whatev.

  • Yeah, that's a little weird.

That said, I still call my dad Daddy.  Not in public or anything, but I do.  I will also occasionally call my mom "Mama" (not in a baby voice or anything, but more in a joking "Hey Mama!" way).  Overall though, they're Mom & Dad.  And that's absolutely how they'd refer to themselves too.  They'd never sign something "Mommy & Daddy".

    And yes, I realize I'm a dweeb.

I'm with Merin, I will still call my mom "mommy" or "mama" but just in a playing way and not in public.  I don't do it very often, maybe a couple times a year if that.  She doesn't sign anything "mommy" or "mama" though.

  • I think Mama & Daddy are more of a southern thing. I usually call them Mom & Dad but also say Mama & Daddy.. just depends on what comes out! lol

  • I can't even remember when.. My DH calls his mom-->Mother, and that drives me crazy. I mean not to her face, but he'll say I talked to Mother.. I'm always like WTH, sounds to proper, LOL

  • DH and I use it about each other with Piper...  lol.  I don't really call my mom and dad that, though - maybe sometimes in jest.  I don't think there's a certain age cut-off for it, though.
  • I still call my dad daddy and my mom still called my grandpa daddy.  I stopped mommy probably around age 12?
